Towards A New Republic with Tommy McKearney

Tommy McKearney is an activist, thinker and author. In the past, Tommy was a member of the Provisional IRA movement and participated in the 1980 hunger strike for a total of 53 days. Today, Tommy is a freelance journalist, co-chairperson of the Peadar O'Donnell Socialist Republican Forum and organiser for the Independent Workers Union in Monaghan.

Tommy will outline the issues that face Ireland, touching upon the partition of Ireland, the role of the EU and the place of US Multinationals. Following on from outlining the issues, he will then talk about the struggle needed in achieving the Workers Republic outlined by Connolly. What will it look like and how will we get to it?

This is to be an exciting talk and thought provoking talk with a well established and respected Socialist Republican. Don't miss it.

When: Wednesday October 17th
Time: 7pm
Where: Boole 3, UCC.

All due respect to Tommy but JC has been dead these last 102 years & counting

Relying on the musings of a man who would suffer severe culture shock if dropped into Ireland of 2018 is not a good template on which to build our future...

BTW does he support Irexit?

Yep. Applying the thoughts of the long dead has limits which are invariably negative for those alive now.

And the globalised world and massive consumerism and massive growth in state interferance/support through people's lives would make Connolly and others shudder. Would many of those leftists from that era support unsettled cradle to grave welfare?

There are areas where their ideas are needed. The massive disparity in wealth in multinationals and between the "C-suite" and the regular workers is grotesque. As is the debasement of knowledge as witnessed with Trump and Brexit.

And housing is still an utter failure. But there we also have to house migrants from theocracies and imperialist hangovers and a massive underclass who Connolly might initially recognise but grow to despise.

McKearney.

Anyone who compares the EU in any way to what Britain did during the 70s and 80s in N Ireland has totally lost the plot.

A communist republic is an oxymoron, you know this, right?
