Traveller children being failed by the government

The Children’s Rights Alliance has awarded the Government an ‘E’ grade for their performance in relation to Traveller children. These kids in live in conditions that are far below the "minimum required for healthy child development". Pretty shameful stuff as we fail probably our oldest minority. The children's referendum was only a small first step.

IN A NEW report out today, the Children’s Rights Alliance has awarded the Government an ‘E’ grade for its “unsatisfactory” performance on the issues affecting Traveller children.
In its annual Report Card, the CRA notes that Traveller children are “almost universally worse” than their settled peers and they live in conditions that are far below the minimum required for healthy child development.
The Report Card also highlights the government’s particularly poor performance with regard to Traveller children and education. It found, on average Travellers finish full-time education 4.7 years earlier than those in the general population and the percentage of Travellers with no formal education in 2011 was 17.7 per cent, compared with 1.4 per cent in the general population.
Martin Collins of Pavee Point said it was shocking that in this day and age Traveller children continue to face these levels of inequality.
"The disproportionate cuts to Traveller education will only serve to reinforce and condemn another generation of young Travellers to exclusion and marginalisation.
We are calling on the government to urgently outline what steps it will take to support and protect the rights of Traveller children rather than furthering inequalities. The government must ensure that every child can enjoy all their rights equally".

When the hell are parents (not just travellers) going to start taking responsibility for their own children. Even in my own area parents let kids as young as 7 or 8 run around in the dark on school nights. I'm sick of everyone blaming the government for their own shortcomings when it comes to how their kids behave. Maybe if these traveller parents stopped spending thousands on their kids communion they could put a bit aside for their education.

Fookin society blaming everything on anyone but themselves.

I'd like to become a traveller because of the care-free, romantic life-style. I also admire their horsemanship and the way they take no crap from the man. Some traveller women are very beautiful and aren't afraid of rearing large families. Where can I apply?

What is shameful? What are we doing for 'settled' children/familes that we aren't doing for travellers? You can't help those who don't want to help themselves.

So, traveller children live in conditions below the minimum required for healthy development and leave school on average 4.7 years earlier than settled community! Maybe those problems would be solved if they lived like the settled community?

I have no sympathy for travellers and nothing but contempt for people and organisations who spout nonsense about how they are do disadvantaged and unfortunate and that's it's no fault of their own!

No other group in Ireland has had as many millions thrown at them, special education, special housing, etc., with as little effect.

Go down to your nearby halting site and repeat verbatim what you just typed. You will then become intimately familiar with traveller culture. Enjoy boss.

Ok, I'll go down there tomorrow after I pack in the job. I'm tired of living a settled life, paying taxes and worrying about things I have no influenece on anyway. With spring coming now I feel the call of the road and with great packages available for internet roaming these days I can still post regularly here on P.ie. from the bare back of my P.iebald pony.

If the government had given me half the assistance it gives to travellers and their children I'd have personally given them an "A" no problem.

Well if your black, gay, asian, intelligent, care for your community, respect the environment etc.. you have no chance. Oh also most of their wimmins are married off and have kids by the time they are 18 but shhhh let's not talk about that because we have to be PC right.

I actually agree with this assessment from The Children's Rights Alliance. Obviously, and we all know this is true, Travellers generally do not advocate education as a way to improve their lives. Their lives have usually been improved by money, not education, hence why should Traveller parents consider education a "must" as settled parents do? Therefore it is obvious that government should have used their powers to ensure that Traveller children attend school and if they don't, their parents pay the price, and I mean money when I say price, because that is something all Travellers would understand and therefore their children, who I have found to be beautiful, intelligent, and brave girls and boys, will in time benefit and when they are parents they will know the value of education and ensure their children get the best.
