You're dreaming I'm afraid.

Travellers don't want the girls educated because if they have options they might not want to spend the rest of their life cleaning a caravan.

They also don't want the girls in education when puberty hits in case they form a relationship with a non-traveller......and might not want to spend the rest of their life cleaning a caravan.
A lot of the males are against education but the girls are fairly up for it in my experience. And they've the most to gain.

Boys are taught from infancy that the way to solve problems is with your fists, not through education.

The situation isn't the fault of non-travellers, some 'cultures' simply aren't fit for purpose.

That's defeatist though. I think the girls are their best bet. Educate the girls, and the men will have to follow.

Defeatist ?

We've being throwing untold millions at Traveller education for decades & we're still looking at over 80% illiteracy.

Its not our fault.

Yeah, maybe try with the girls, but they have to be married & producing kids by 18 or whatever.

And I don't know if you've noticed but traveller society is quite male dominated, so not sure that "the men will have to follow"

But we teach them the regular curriculum which is no good if they're not there the whole time. And as I said throwing money at the problem does nothing. The Dept needs to get real and not be so lazy. In any poor society, if you educate the women, you improve that society.

Unfortunately thats not the way they do things they see women's primary role as having as many children as they can and to serve all the male folk, a career for any woman from the travelling community is completely out of the question.

That's the same with any 'backward' society. But we can change things if we empower the women.

They love the rituasl of the church, and attend mass but I wouldn't describe that as being truly religious though.

In some ways Travelers are more educated than us, a number of years ago when the Gov. done away with the first holy grant most people never knew it existed, any NS teachers who was teaching traveler kids doing the FH knew about it as the P knows what they are entitled too which the rest has not got a clue

You could try asking that statue of the virgin Mary that went ''missing'' the other day, oh wait....

i was inside the internet cafe

a traveller came in

he wanted the computers at the back to be (and stay) vacant whenever he walked in

he wanted the place to himself so he could watch porn

i know he was watching porn because he played it so so loud the whole cafe could hear it even when he was wearing headphones

i walked in once, there only 3 seats available: the 2 computers at the back or a computer next to a woman with a baby who was screeching

i went to the back

after he walked in he asked me how long was i online
i ignored him so he tipped me on the shoulder and asked me again
i ignored him again so he grabbed the mouse and started moving it to make the clock pop up
to use the internet was 2.50 an hour

when you used the computers there was a timer to show how long you'd been there

my clock was 63 mins

he smiled at me and said "You must have loads of money"

the owner walked over and asked me is he bothering you? i said no

a couple of weeks later i was outside the cinema

it was a nice night

i was waiting to buy a ticket for a 10.45 screening

he was there
he started shouting "IM DYIN TO TAKE A SH-T "

the majority of irish people despise travellers

some of that is racism but most of that hatred has been well earned

they intimidate us

Martin Collins can use all the fancy words he likes but at the end of the day this country hates them

here in Listowel there is a lovely place to walk

the John B Keane road

i used to go for a walk in the evening (sometimes during the day)

I'd start at Aldi then walk past Lidl then past the roundabout then down to Mckenna's yard then back up to Aldi again

sometimes i took an umbrella in case it rained

one day i was walking towards McKenna's yard it started raining so i opened the umbrella

i heard someone screaming YOU AND YOUR FU-KIN UMBRELLA!!!!!!!!!!!!!

a traveller drove past in one of those sulky things

now I've never met him before

for the life of me i can't understand why a total stranger would scream like that

the only explanation is ...

when he has the horse on a straight stretch of road he likes to put the pedal to the floor (so to speak)

when i opened the umbrella it must have distracted the animal

i stopped going for walks after that

i hope he's happy, he has the road to himself now

They do intimidate people which is a nasty form of discrimination .

I've grown up near halting sites, legal and illegal, all my life.
I expect the reason why all my interactions with them were negative would be due to the fact that we moved in different social circles. For the benefit of the doubt, I'd expect there are great people among that community who don't bother anyone; but I've never met these people.

I believe everyone should be treated equally. Therefore, I think making Travelers their own ethnic group is the biggest load of cra*p. I would support it in so far as acknowledging they have a culture of their own, but that is it. I would make absolutely no concessions.
If you want to use the state, you have to adhere to the mechanics and rules of the state. People discriminate against people from certain neighbourhoods and postal codes. It's a sad reality, but does not justify creating an ethnic grouping.
