Wtf is all this cry baby stuff , cant these thumb sucking morons do basket weaving or do their gap yah in Syr-yh and toughen up a bit. As far as I can see availing of a trigger warning should mean getting thrown off the course.

Oxford University's law students too

They are destined to be barristers and judges – but undergraduates studying law at Oxford are being told before lectures on cases involving violence or death that they can leave if they fear the content will be too ‘distressing’.
The revelation marks the arrival from the US of ‘trigger warnings’ – the politically correct notion that students should be warned before they encounter material that could elicit a traumatic response.
Lecturers have been asked by the director of undergraduate studies for law to ‘bear in mind’ using trigger warnings when they give lectures containing ‘potentially distressing’ content.

An Oxford spokesman said: ‘The university aims to encourage independent and critical thinking and does not, as a rule, seek to protect students from ideas or material they may find uncomfortable. However, there may be occasions when a lecturer feels it is appropriate to advise students of potentially distressing subject matter.’
And the warnings extend beyond Oxford’s law department. One undergraduate studying English was given a warning about Robert Lowell’s poem For The Union Dead, because it contains a racial epithet.
She said: ‘We were warned that the poem contained a racial slur and that we could leave the room before it was read out or cover it up on the page.’
Sociologist Professor Frank Furedi, said: ‘Trigger warnings diminish the quality of intellectual freedom on campuses – as we’ve seen in America.
‘It’s really regrettable that Oxford, which used to be a bastion of academic excellence, is allowing these pressures to create conformism.’

As a former law student myself, I fully empathise.

I'm still traumatised by my reading of the judgment of Jolly green giant vs Santa Claus .

Such horrid vitriolic mud-slinging over ownership of the slogan 'Ho Ho Ho'.

Still can't eat peas at Christmas.

After which they will spend the day watching US crime series featuring sadistic murders, rape, racism etc. Very few trigger warnings on commercial tv (nor should there be).

Anyone else notice that as humanities departments react with horror to the notion of traditional gender being anything other than an oppressive construct, toy companies are ramping up gender-specific marketing with strict delineation of boy vs girl toys?

Attempting to control discourse in the context where freedom of thought should be valued above all else, while ignoring the out-of-control commercial media & marketing is just insane.

I have seen this so many times, utterly useless little KKuuuuunts that sneak their way into the corridors of power that use human rights bollixology to justify their utterly useless existence in our time.

Geldof, O Gorman, Gilmore etc, complete fooking wafflers that , in the end , have made ZERO difference but have made lots and lots of money,,,

Comedians like the above mentioned are smart but know about money, sure Bono (God Love him) is only getting it now, the Jesus in his head will not transfer to the actual scientific, practical, reality of solving over population and providing jobs.

A realist would simply stop the third world from overpopulating , replace the judiciary with software for career crims after 10 convictions,(so that innocent people are safe) make all politicians bank accounts public, check the EU Countries that watch the Eurovision in large numbers for intelligence and enshrine free speech no matter the consequences in the state.

These lawyers should actually spend at least 2 years as a beat cop in the worst kips in the land and see the reality of life, I met one scumbag recently, seen him coming , weighed up what he said and quickly put this little fooking piece of sh1t in his place, I did not feel anyway superior or better but scum is scum, you cannot gentrify it, you can only deal with the reality.

Reminds me a little of an episode after the Trinity Ball several years ago, when the Gardai were dealing with some drunken students who were actually more of a danger to themselves than anyone else. One female student banged her head repeatedly against the bonnet of a car. A Garda was quoted as exclaiming: "And these are the people who will be ruling us!"

Things haven't improved since and I'm sure Trinity will be providing trigger warnings soon.

My Lord I would ask the Court not to my client as "the accused", he finds the term offensive!

When exactly did the world go mad? I'm a 40 something year old and grew up running around as a kid without hi viz jackets or safe spaces. My parents taught me right from wrong, about how to treat other people with respect and how to stand up for myself. Now we live in a world where some parents are pulling their kids out of school in protest about their precious little snowflakes feeling stressed about taking exams. What the actual f uck is wrong with people.

Every week there's another story highlighting how wussy people are getting and it genuinely is making me lose hope for humanity. Life is very stressful and it's a parents job to prepare their children for life in the real world. The thought of these spineless kids being the future of the world should worry people.

What's wrong with warning someone before exposing them to something that might cause them distress?
