I have on occasion given money to Trocaire, foolishly believing that their objective was solely in the area of providing relief to feed the starving millions in famine stricken areas and economically devastated third world countries and not within the realm of political campaigning.

I shall not be making the mistake of ever donating money to Trocaire again, as I am sure many others will follow suit after the publication of this article in the Independent:

Trocaire's call for Israel ban is 'beyond its remit'

It would appear that Trocaire have been actively involved in a campaign calling for a boycott of West Bank Israeli goods and Fine Gale Chairman Charlie Flanagan has rightly taken them to task on it:

"I am very concerned about their stance and their political bias. Trocaire is an official organisation linked to Irish Aid -- the State's programme of assistance to developing countries. It is a major recipient of taxpayers' money through Irish Aid.

"They are currently calling for a boycott of Israeli products and calling for a ban on trade with those producing goods on the West Bank and have called for a ban on what they described as 'illegal goods'. It is my belief they are now engaged in a very partisan political campaign that is beyond their remit."
Charlie Flanagan goes on to make a very profound observation:

He added: "I hope every family, whose children brings home a Trocaire box for the mantlepiece, should be aware of the true nature of Trocaire's campaign in the Middle East."

Why is Charlie Flanagan excised about this? I'm not trying to be funny here but are FG great supporters of Israel? No cheap shots please - A night on the canvas with Messrs Ring & Flanagan for the poster who makes the most obvious response about a prominent FG zionist.

Kilcullen is right, Flanagan is the last of the Blueshirt aspect of FG...

"The Israeli settlements in the West Bank have been built on occupied land. Their existence has been repeatedly deemed illegal by the UN and the International Court of Justice. But Irish and EU policy towards the Israeli settlements defies logic. We consider them illegal -- yet we economically support them."

There is one of two possible solutions to the area.

1. A two state solution with ALL the settlers removed.

2. A single democratic state with equality for all.

"Last month Trocaire executive director Justin Kilcullen wrote about Irish and EU policy towards the settlements.

"The Israeli settlements in the West Bank have been built on occupied land. Their existence has been repeatedly deemed illegal by the UN and the International Court of Justice. But Irish and EU policy towards the Israeli settlements defies logic. We consider them illegal -- yet we economically support them."

Trócaire are to be congratulated for pointing out this absurdity and the double standards of those who continue to turn a blind eye to the ever expanding illegal settlements and the diversion of water to them and away from the Palestinians.
This is a much more important initiative than trying to work through aid to have the Palestinians accept their lot just because the West is for ever committed to the Israeli cause right or wrong.

No irony. There are senior figures in Trócaire who have just hopped over from the IPSC. No wonder the focus is now on Israel.

Not a word about Tibet, of course. Oh no.....

disagree with Flanagan completely here. Trocaire's stand against colonialism is to be commended.
