US President Donald Trump has approved supplying weapons to Kurdish forces fighting so-called Islamic State (IS) in Syria, the Pentagon says.

Kurdish elements of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) would be equipped to help drive IS from its stronghold, Raqqa, a spokeswoman said.

The US was "keenly aware" of Turkey's concerns about such a move, she added.

Turkey views the Kurdish rebels as terrorists and wants to stop them taking more territory in Syria.
The SDF, which comprises Kurdish and Arab militias, is already being supported by elite US forces and air strikes from a US-led coalition.

A Pentagon source told the BBC the equipment would include ammunition, small arms, machine guns, heavy machine guns, construction equipment such as bulldozers and armoured vehicles.
The source added that the US would "seek to recover" the equipment afterwards.

I love the last line.
Regardless, Turkey is not going to be happy with this move.

Is this a move by Trump to put pressure on ISIS, or is Erdogan also a target ?

More likely he has been given assurances.

Rudy Giuliani, the jailed Turkish gold trader and the secret meeting with Erdogan

Some analysts in Turkey suggested that if Zarrab were to be freed or returned to Turkey, Erdogan might be more inclined to fall in line with US interests in the Middle East. Sinan Ulgen, a former Turkish diplomat and the chairman of the Centre for Economics and Foreign Policy Studies, a liberal-leaning Turkish think tank, said the strategy implied that “allowing a free pass to Zarrab and company would create good will in Ankara that Washington could use to advance its own regional agenda”, with clearer support or at least less interference from the Turkish government.

You sound just like some tangerine-faced gimp that was shouting this sort of thing last autumn. Anyone know what became of him?

Just shows that one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter.

"Terrorist", in general, just means "my enemy"..

The Kurds were already armed by the USA and had Air support also.
What Turkey doesn't want is the Kurds in Iraq merging with the ones in Syria / Turkey because they can unite and ask for Nation for themselves.

Interesting enough they have a good relationship with Israel, unlike the Arab nations:

I hope the Kurds aren't being used, can see the Americans ditch Sultan Erdogan over the Kurds if it comes to it and it eventually will.

I'd love to see a Kurdish state. It would put an end to a lot of needless violence.
