Trump's people are circulating a draft budget (written by the extreme-right Heritage Foundation) which will cut the Federal budget by 1 trillion per year, equal to 25% or so of all spending.

Trump team prepares dramatic cuts | TheHill

"The changes they propose are dramatic.

The departments of Commerce and Energy would see major reductions in funding, with programs under their jurisdiction either being eliminated or transferred to other agencies. The departments of Transportation, Justice and State would see significant cuts and program eliminations.

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting would be privatized, while the National Endowment for the Arts and National Endowment for the Humanities would be eliminated entirely."

"The Heritage blueprint used as a basis for Trump’s proposed cuts calls for eliminating several programs that conservatives label corporate welfare programs: the Minority Business Development Agency, the Economic Development Administration, the International Trade Administration and the Manufacturing Extension Partnership. The total savings from cutting these four programs would amount to nearly $900 million in 2017.

At the Department of Justice, the blueprint calls for eliminating the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services, Violence Against Women Grants and the Legal Services Corporation and for reducing funding for its Civil Rights and its Environment and Natural Resources divisions.

At the Department of Energy, it would roll back funding for nuclear physics and advanced scientific computing research to 2008 levels, eliminate the Office of Electricity, eliminate the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy and scrap the Office of Fossil Energy, which focuses on technologies to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

Under the State Department’s jurisdiction, funding for the Overseas Private Investment Corporation, the Paris Climate Change Agreement and the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change are candidates for elimination."

In summary, they are taking $1 trillion in spending out of the US economy every year, lowering GDP by 5%. This will cause a recession.

Christ.

Nothing about cuts to the military budget in that article either. THAT is where real reform is needed.. not just for economic reasons.

On the positive side...

Moving Trump’s budget through Congress could be difficult. In 2015, with the GOP in control of the House, the RSC budget failed by a vote of 132 to 294.

Moderate Republicans and Democrats on the Appropriations Committee are likely to push back at some of the cuts being considered by Trump.

Great news.

As for GDP, the almost total colapse of sales of CDs and DVDs would be recorded as a decline in GDP.
Has it resulted in a decline in living standards?
CD sales were replaced gradually by other economic activity. Removing 1 Trillion in spending from an economy in one year will cause a recession.

Looks as if Trump is implementing the bonfire of the quangos that FG failed to deliver on.

The National debt will still mushroom under his watch and there will be more tax breaks for millionaires, corporate welfare and Offence Spending will increase or remain the same - all this while the media continue the lie that it is the left which is reckless with the nation's finances.

His will be a particularly tragic Presidency for most Americans.

With a national debt $20 trillion (up from $9.6 trillion in 2009), America needs to reduce what it owes, fast.

Can you imagine if the government here said they were cutting spending by €15billion (circa 1/4 of our total spending)!!

Battered women are not some exotic species, poor people needing legal rep are not some exotic species, the environment is not some faraway planet. The real fat is with their corporate subsidies to the tune of trillions and tax breaks for rich people who ship whatever they bring in away to a Caribbean island.

If he is looking to cut back by $1trillion a year then the programmes named are only small potatoes and its entitlement programmes that are going to get the big hit. Foreign Aid I'd expect will be all but eliminated.

The 2008 recession resulted in a 2% fall in US GDP. Trump will cut 5% off GDP.

I might be alone, but I see a problem here.
