The Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and the Adalet ve Kalkınma Partisi have shifted Turkey's direction from alignment with the West to embracing Islamism. The net result is that things in Turkey are bad and getting worse.

It confirms what I always suspected - that the EU forcing Turkey to neuter the military with the new constitution would allow the actual Islamist sympathies of most Turks to destroy the secular legacy of Ataturk. There is now an autocracy in NATO.

South America is full of Catholic failed states.
Whatever about that. I do not see those folk blowing themselves to Kingdom Come on a daily basis. The situation in Turkey is indeed critical.

South America is full of Catholic failed states.
Economically, they're catching up with the rest of the world and democracy is becoming firmly embedded there. In the Islamic (and especially Arab) world, the opposite is true.

Turkey is slowly heading towards a multifactional civil war.

Secularists.
Kurds.
And several Islamist factions who are attacking the first two, & comprting over each others.
Various minorities in certain regions.
Al Qaeda
ISIS
Corruption

And Saudi money ( & other Gulf money ) showing up in all sorts of places.

Another civil war made in Saudi Arabia.

You forgot the basic shi*t stirring Neoliberals and feminists. Doing as they do for a great income for themselves and theirs. Erdogan is trying to cut-out the poison before it gets a stranglehold on the purse of the state. Unfortunately the Doodles(Democrats) and Merkel will keep supplying them with money to keep going and going and going and going....., until they eventually get their own way by boring their opposition to death with billions of regulations to get rich by.

There was no mention of Latin America in the OP.

Sounds like a deliberate attempt at deflection.

Any state that worships a paedophile as a prophet, takes young girls as child brides and stones women to death for being raped is a failed state.

And they're ........off..................

No matter that a million people will die, another million will end up at our dinner table. For a lifestyle that they themselves demand a right to at the expense of western society itself (debauchery).

As long as the Neolibbers and the Feminists get their way, their rights, their control, that's all that counts.

Roll out that Fn Halifax Gibbet,,,,,quick.

First the Newspaper men and Women, then the Entrepreneurs, then the GS Academics, then the pi*ss-head Psudo-Politicans.

There are many forces afoot in the artificial state which is Turkey. First off, we have the failed Gulenist/CIA coup. Then we have the rise of Islamic nutters Erdogan style. Then we have the Kurdish fifth columnists. Then we have the oppressed Christian minorities. Then we have the heroic effords of Russia and Syria to establish peace in the region. We must also remember how Erdogan gutted his army, much like Stalin did prior to the Winter war.

Always the Saudis. That cancer must be removed from the world

Yes and there are many of these types in Ireland

Erdogan as a Muslim Brotherhood extremist has been using the refugees to destroy Europe, letting them invade in waves. Hafez Assad in Syria and Nasser in Egypt understood how to handle these devils, as does Sisi. Of course, issue number one in Ireland is to support the Halawas and thereby endanger our own nightclubs

Brilliant analysis and so original

In retrospect, it would have been better for the people of Turkey had last year's attempted coup succeeded.

Relevance? Actually most of them are pretty secular and relatively progressive these days, and some are making considerable economic progress. They also tend not to go around shooting up nightclubs and driving lorries into crowds.

Possibly, though it seems the majority actually want Erdogan and his fundamentalist thugs. The difficulty with the Middle East is that military dictatorships are often more progressive and less oppressive than democratically-elected civilian regimes which are almost always Islamist at this stage.

Economic failure in the vast majority of Muslim majority states lie at the heart of the crisis in the Islamic world. That should have led to root and branch reform but the only outcome seems to be economic resentment directed at more successful countries and cultures (which is pretty much the rest of the world) and boatloads of migrants flooding across the Mediterranean.

Western left-wing f__kwits on Al-Jazeera and Russia Today Facebook pages saying that it's all someone else's fault make matters worse.

For a country to thrive, the state needs to be strong and for that to happen, people need to identify with the state. Islam is such an overwhelming part of people's lives, telling them how to do everything, that too many people identify themselves primarily as Muslim, not as Moroccans, Algerians, Jordanians etc.

That means that Islamic majority states don't achieve the internal cohesion to be democratic and successful.

A serious question :

Which parts of the world were once Muslim, and then renounce or reject it ?

Spain springs to mind. What others ?

The argument being, once islam gets a foothold, it is extremely difficult for anything else to prosper. Not secular enlightenment, not any other religion, not athiesm....what are the lessons from history ?

That's bang on Dame. And a good example of the dangers of western universalism.
