Turkey: Oscar Wilde and the Kurdish Question

Nice to see Oscar continuing to cause controversy; this time in the Turkish parliament, when quoted by a HDP (the Kurdish People's Democratic Party) MP in relation to the breakdown of the Turkish-Kurdish peace process. AKP deputies needed an explanation of who Wilde was, promptly followed by indignation at the use of a non-Turkish/non-Islamic author.

The initial confusion about who Wilde is, which can be forgiven, was then replaced by a stock AKP/Conservative reaction; criticism of anything that doesn’t belong to “their civilisation.”
...
The HDP, according to the AKP doesn’t belong to Turkey, it is a ‘pawn of outside forces,’ ‘a rag-tag team of troublemakers who are the extension of terrorists,’ and ‘Armenians, Assyrians, crypto-Jews and Christians who are enemies of the state.’ To use a quote from Oscar Wilde, who for them is the ‘other,’ is further proof of this.
A neat microcosm of the dangerous state of Turkey and the plight of the Kurds.

A neat microcosm of the dangerous state of Turkey and the plight of the Kurds.
Claims of foreign interference, plots and conspiracies, traitors, terrorists and all sorts of random troublemakers is a defining characteristic of all demented regimes. Its a familiar and currently popular mantra undergoing a real revival lately.

When you hear this sort of guff from any given nation its time to be very wary.

Gan dabt Oscar Wilde is a colossus of Englisg literature. However he did actively solict underage boys for sex. He regularly went on holiday to Tunisia. Morocco and Greece for that very reason. That he paid the boys is beside the point. Judging by our modern standards he would be guilty of some pretty serious crimes.

A brawl at a wheelchair basketball match in Germany between rival Turkish supporters left seven fans needing treatment in hospital, police say.

The game was part of the four-day European Champions Cup, a club competition being played in the eastern German town of Zwickau.

About 60 fans from the Istanbul-based clubs Besiktas and Galatasaray were involved.

They began attacking each other with knives and baseball bats. ...
