A report in today's Sunday Tribune says that Eoghan O Neachtáin,GIS told and threatened TV3 camera crew and staff that they were not welcome in Gov Buildings during a recent release there. He did say however that RTE were welcome ! This is a most serious escalation of the one party, one TV reporting Eastern Bloc style of government. Do FF and Gov Press secretary control and own Gov Buildings ? Surprised this has not been reported before now. Sorry I do not have link, but it may be available later.

It may have something to do with the bold Ursala's rather direct question to Cowen concerning his inebriated state.

I suspect that may be the case. Gov are now doing interviews with Biffo by GIS staff, Mark Costigan, and releasing them to press. No doubt RTE will oblige and snap up such scoops !

Last week, Brian Cowen did an interview with his own Government Press Secretary, and it was covered on RTE. No "independent" journalists were allowed to interview him, or question him.

The State broadcaster should have flatly refused to air the interview. Either he faces the media, or he doesn't. Simple as that.

Indeed it is but if he's being held up to a required standard shouldn't the media doing the interviews be held to the same standard?

Show up in proper state of mind and do the interview to the best of his ability. In return he should expect to talk to an interviewer who can demonstrate a little more than just "Paxmanesque" aggression. Quite a few "journalists" out there I wouldn't want to be interviewed by.

And if he was not in proper state of mind, would "interview" with GIS go ahead ?

With the GIS he is not tied into the tyranny of media schedules. No doubt they'll choose the best time so he's full of beans. TBH considering what he says most of the time does it really matter who interviews him?

it all went wrong when Ursala's microphone hand was caught in a car door incident at a tribunal escape at (was it) Dublin Castle. It is more difficult to pull the pins of hand grenades and chuck them into the press huddle when you only have one hand.

what is wrong with giving an exclusive government buildings interview to ex century radio RTE returnee (strike breaker) david davin power?

I suspect that the TV3 licence issue was delayed for years because they knew this kinda TV would happen.

Obama is on the money attacking Fox Noise

If you have your facts and figures no amount of aggression can put you off.

Is this government going Chinese?

We know that China is a force to be reckoned with and that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but this is getting ridiculous. In her column yesterday Miriam Lord tells a tale that takes on a new resonance if this story is true.

Li Chang Chun, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, was in Dublin for an official visit at the beginning of the week.[...]

The next day, Li had a meeting with Brian Cowen. The Chinese delegation went next door to the museum. After their visit, they emerged back into the Leinster House car park via a side gate. This meant they didn’t have to pass protesters outside on the footpath. Meanwhile, TV3’s Ursula Halligan and camerawoman Naomi Seale were sitting on the plinth, minding their own business, waiting for Fine Gael’s Fergus O’Dowd to arrive for interview. One of the member of the Chinese delegation walked across to them, speaking into his sleeve.

He glared at the two women. They smiled back. Then he jabbed a finger at the camera and tripod. “Move your camera!” he barked.

“Beg your pardon?”

“MOVE. YOUR. CAMERA!”

Ursula was having none of it. “Who are you? I certainly will not. Who are you?” Another member of the propaganda chief’s entourage raced over. “Misunderstanding! Misunderstanding!” he cried, smiling fixedly at the nonplussed reporter and camerawoman as he propelled away his scowling colleague.

We may complain here about having to put up with uppity media handlers and politicians who have lost the run of themselves, but thing could be a lot more worse.
A lot more worse indeed...

This is preposterous. Eoghan O Neachtáin should be sacked. I'd expect Kenny and Gilmore to bring this up in the Dáil. Halligan was dead right to ask Cowen the hard question after he disrespected the office of Taoiseach with that pathetic attempt at an interview. Now Cowen is disrespecting the press.
