In todays Irish News, a pop art mural which was commissioned for a U2 video and which replaced a previously painted tribute to murdered IRSP activist and Queens University lecturer Miriam Daly, has itself been taken down.

Members of the IRSP will gather in west Belfast this weekend to unveil a new mural dedicated to a murdered member after the original was replaced by a painting that included lyrics from U2.

The original mural was painted in 1996 by a son of Miriam Daly, who was shot dead by loyalists in west Belfast in 1980.

However, in 2014 it was replaced by a new painting which included lyrics “I can’t change the world but I can change the world in me” from U2 song Rejoice.

IRSP spokesman Michael Kelly said it was changed without "meaningful consultation".

“One can easily see how the decision to replace the thoughts of a fallen Irish revolutionary with the words ‘I can’t change the world’ would be met with a degree of anger," he said.

“The IRSP decided that our best response to frustrations which had been expressed across the entire republican base was to rededicate the Oakman Street corner wall in memory of Miriam Daly herself, replicating as best we could the aesthetics and message of the original mural. We trust that our decision will be respected and met favourably by all concerned.”

The new mural will be unveiled after a parade from Costello House on the Falls Road to Oakman Street starting at 1pm on Sunday.

Has anyone asked the owner of the house, which, if either, they want painted on their wall.

I know they do so in Strabane but I dont know anyone who would decline the request. My main objection would all the people who would come to your house to look at the thing.

Interesting how they're all doing murals, in the english style. Must be something to do with the peace process?
Anyone who knows what happened to Miriam Daly - being raped by her "comrade" and then being set up by INLA tout to be murdered - might appreciate the macabre message of this horrible atrocity of "art".
