UCD SU, Ireland's largest 3rd level institute, has voted to leave USI by 1687 to 1039.

LIVE BLOG :: USI referendum count | The College Tribune

All kinds of mad rumours abounding that it's all a great big YFG plot (LookLeft Mag's Facebook page).

What now for the USI? It would seem that some national union of students is needed in order to maximise any influence that students want to have on the Government and other bodies. Each individual union is easy to ignore on their own and a divide and conquer approach could be taken to them.

The USI seems to suffer from simply being seen as a convenient jump off point for national political careers for budding FFers and FGers (Lab in the past).

So one unheeded body becomes two unheeded bodies?

What has the USI ever done for students? As the OPer says, all it seems to provide is the launchpad for the political careers of its officers.

In fairness to ordinary SUs, many of them do very useful work for their members. USI is a talking shop for student politicians; I doubt any student would suffer if it disappeared tomorrow

Surely, pedantically, that should read UCDSU has voted to leave USI?

The anti-USI and pro-Coca Cola campaigns on college campuses have generally had strong YFG elements over the last decade. If this is true in UCD also then they are to be congratulated. A nice slap in the face for the USI and its Fianna Fáil president

The slow-moving smashing-up of the USI continues.

Ah in fairness, the USI was great for the travel pass, and getting the J1s. Think that's about it really. That's probably changed now I suppose.

Are you still claiming not to be a FGer?

I think they left in the 70's too, although it didn't effect the US visas

Gardai discovered two student bodies in separate Dublin locations this afternoon.

The first, a 54 year-old mature student of sociology, politics, and social climbing, was found buried in the botanical gardens. The body had the a tattoo with the initials USI. Gardai have appealed to the public for more information about this tattoo as it is believed to be worn by members of an Eastern European gang suspected to be in Ireland and working in the country's architecture community.

FF and FG representatives were quickly at the scene offering consolation, succor, and advice to relatives.

The second body was found on Belfield campus by members of a travelling circus.

Garda sources told RTE that judging by its articulation and temperature, the body had probably been discovered for about an hour. No identification has been made yet, but Gardai told RTE that judging by the shape of the jaw and density of the leg bone it belonged to an entity that probably sprung into existence in the Dublin area in the past two or three days.

The two bodies are believed to be unrelated.

That's why it's easy to sneer.

The only real student strike in UL over the last decade was when they introduced charges for parking your car. You couldn't make it up.

Just wait til the forthcoming cuts in third-level education spend come through. Students won't like having to stuff their own mushrooms for lunch every day!

Ah, student politics! The memories of smelly-sweater-clad Citizen Smith wannabies in need of a good shave (not to mention their male counterparts!) screeching over massive PA systems in Belfield Concourse that the (largely indifferent) Masses had to Cast Off Their Shackles and occupy the Admin Bulding NOW!!!

Apart from the lucky ones who took the traditional escape route into RTE, I suppose most of them have progressed to running golf clubs or book clubs in Rathgar now.

Could they not park it themselves and avoid the charge? :)

Is TCD in USI? I remember going back to even my student days that this affiliation/disaffiliation malarky was all the rage 20 years ago!
