my reading of the situation is pretty close to that of Mark Thomas

"Remember today it was the BANKS that took our money, we paid the bail out. We get the cuts. They get bonuses."

it'll be interesting to see how it plays out today

The basics are known, 83 billion in cuts, 500,000 laid off from the public sector. It's how this will break down to the "ordinary man" which will attract most attention though.

The beeb are, as always, giving excellent coverage: BBC News - Spending Review

And Nick Clegg is certainly not shirking away from this:

Nick Clegg has written to all Liberal Democrat members ahead of the spending review. The deputy prime minister says Lib Dems have been involved in the decision-making process "all the way". He writes: "We have a hard road to recovery ahead, but we are determined to ensure it is a road that leads to fairness too

how do you figure that? they have only just been in government a few months . We will have to wait see the impacts of over a million newly unemployed.

don't forget that right up until the end of 08 the tories were promising to match the Labour spend pound for pound. They made a strategic shift to capitalise as much as possible on the wider banking crisis.

"no family out of work will receive more in benefits than the average family receives in work" - a cap will be introduced.
