The British government has announced that it plans to withdraw from an agreement that allows other countries to fish in UK waters.

The London Fisheries Convention, signed in 1964 allows Irish, Dutch, French, German and Belgian vessels to fish between six and twelve miles from the UK coastline.

Environment Secretary Michael Gove says the move would help "take back control" of fishing access to UK waters.

Clearly, this is Brexit-related; British fishing communities were amongst the strongest supporters of withdrawal. However, the convention was signed 9 years before the UK joined the then EEC and the Brexit referendum vote wasn't about this convention.

That's 12 nautical miles which is closer to 14 miles and over 22km. It would affect us I'd image only in terms of the Howth boats that fish around the IoM. But Ireland should also withdraw.

I presume that the other countries affected will be doing the same for British boats in their waters?

IoM waters aren't UK waters though, strictly speaking.

Rule, Britannia!

Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves!
Britons never, never, never shall be slaves.

When Britain first, at heaven's command,
Arose from out the azure main,
This was the charter of the land,
And Guardian Angels sang this strain:

(Chorus)

The nations not so blest as thee
Must, in their turn, to tyrants fall,
While thou shalt flourish great and free:
The dread and envy of them all.

(Chorus)

Still more majestic shalt thou rise,
More dreadful from each foreign stroke,
As the loud blast that tears the skies
Serves but to root thy native oak.

(Chorus)

Thee haughty tyrants ne'er shall tame;
All their attempts to bend thee down
Will but arouse thy generous flame,
But work their woe and thy renown.

(Chorus)

To thee belongs the rural reign;
Thy cities shall with commerce shine;
All thine shall be the subject main,
And every shore it circles, thine.

(Chorus)

The Muses, still with freedom found,
Shall to thy happy coasts repair.
Blest isle! with matchless beauty crowned,
And manly hearts to guard the fair.

(Chorus)
Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves!
Britons never, never, never shall be slaves.

We should get out too

- these 'agreements' have destroyed our native fishing industry!:evil:

Ironically the EU was saving them from slavery, the Tories can't wait to put 8 year olds back up chimneys.

Well obviously brexit happened for a reason this being one of many reasons, to put their own peoples interest first, which is exactly what we should be doing in this country.

I think Ireland is beyond help, with our political classes looking to France :roll: and Germany :confused: to show us the way forward. Truly fooooooked.

What ye all don't seem to understand is that our interests would be worse served outside the EU.

Ireland overborrowed and then paid it back, we are a very immature nation that we don't get responsbility and need someone else to blame *waves fist at Merkel*

Greenpeace UK isn't impressed and thinks that the Tories could do other more important stuff for fishing communities.

"But Will McCallum, Greenpeace UK head of oceans, said leaving the convention would not in itself deliver a better future for the UK fishing industry, and that for years governments had blamed the EU for their "failure" to support the small-scale, sustainable fishers.
He said Mr Gove needed to keep the 2015 Conservative Party manifesto commitment to "re-balance fishing quotas in favour of small-scale, specific locally based fishing communities
".

Why do you think I'd be able to give a detailed and authoritative answer about the status of Rockall?
I don't, I raise the query to canvass opinion, tis what forums are all about.
