UK: Working class white males to be treated as a disadvantaged minority?

The UK Universities Minister is proposing that for the purposes of entry to third level colleges, white, working class males be treated as a disadvantaged minority. In an exclusive interview with The Independent newspaper, David Willetts has pointed to the dramatic slump in UCAS (like our CAO) applications from men.

Under the proposed plans, white, working-class boys would be included as a target group for recruitment in university access agreements; these are agreements that universities have to sign to gain permission to charge higher fees. Failure to deliver on their access agreements would mean that the universities could face particular sanctions.

Girls have been out-performing boys for some time now and the educational performance of young males – particularly those from white working classes – has worried Ofsted (the UK education standards body) for more than a decade. Working class males have been accused in one report of concentrating more on the three Fs (fighting, football and f***ing) than the three Rs.

If white, working class males are under-represented in third level, then it's hard to argue with the logic of this - that is if one is generally in favour of these affirmative action initiatives. Or perhaps this is just populist grandstanding from an overly ambitious Tory? What sayeth the Politics.ie nation?

If you're a white male in the UK and you find yourself disadvantaged, you really need to examine your life at a very fundamental level.

If a white working class male goes to college, gets a degree and a related job does he not become white, professional class male or something like that?

It struck me while I was reading that article that other disadvantaged minorities tend to be disadvantaged due to discrimination from the wider society. Are whites being discriminated against in the UK now?

I think they only go to college so that they have more chance of getting on to XFactor or something

To what extent has this group landed themselves in this position through their own f:mad:ault? Same as Loyalist working class in N. Ireland where according to the SDLP MP for South Belfast a 16 year old lad walking down the Shankill with a school bag will be ridiculed as a 'sissy'!

May be not! In ROI you won't have the all important contacts to smooth your career path any way!

Sorry. Forgot about all those people, especially the asylum seekers.

Clearly they're the ones with almost all of the money and the power in the UK, hence their ability to discriminate.

Ssshhh We're in the middle of a mass subdivision of the population into disadvantaged groups.
Everyone is a minority so no one is a minority.

most white working class british kids don't care less about education, white working class britain is socially dysfunctional unlike the indian and chinese communities who believe in rigid, coercive, non negotiable discipline as well as valuing education.

What about the working class white male's sister? Isn't she just as disadvantaged? Why does she get not the same deal?

A big part of it is that so many fatherless children are being proxy fathered by the state, and then the brits wonder how they're turning into such a nanny state, welfare has taken the place of so many dope smoking, cider drinking serial fathering idiots. The state is not the nanny, it's the new step-father.

I reckon if you can keep your head above the parapet, it's still easier for a person from a working class background to advance socially in the UK than here! Moss side Vs Southill/Myross? Mind you those in Southill/Myross will be cherished under our SW system and disincentivised from ever getting of their holes to achieve anything, whereas the SW system in UK is more or less destroyed!

A bit more generous. It's about £71.00 per week for a single person over 25, with almost full rent paid (for shared accommodation or a one-bed flat) and council tax benefit.

The benefits pillar of the UK's welfare state is about adequate, although the attacks on it by the Tories aren't going to help people who are struggling.

In addition to cash benefits, there's the NHS and the genuinely free primary and secondary education systems, along with free or very cheap further education (which provides education up to HND level, just under an undergraduate degree).

This means there's no real reason why somebody from a working-class background can't get a HND, followed by a transfer to a university to complete a degree, especially as all further education colleges have formal links with universities allowing students to do just that.

If that's what they want.

The fact is that working-class culture in the UK generally does not place as high a value on university-level education as the middle-class does, and this shouldn't be a cause for concern, given that many university undergraduate degrees are quite worthless in terms of getting a job.

If the Tories were genuinely concerned about increasing participation rates for white working-class males, they'd scrap tuition fees, and introduce student grants (not student loans) for students from lower-income families, re-introduce the Education Maintenance Allowance, and provide increased funding for link programmes between universities and local secondary schools in lower-income areas.
