The UUP has called for the immediate withdrawal of a teaching guide exploring the hunger strikes, which party leader Mike Nesbitt says is “utterly, despicably one-sided”.

Party leader Mr Nesbitt told the Assembly yesterday that he wanted the teaching guide, which accompanies the novel Bog Child, removed from the curriculum. It is aimed at 11-14 year-olds.

“How dare the Department of Education ask pupils to put themselves in the shoes of hunger strikers!” he said
UUP fury over

It seems Nesbitt and the UUP are determined to censor history and distort the learning of children in the six counties.

Whether some unionists like it or not, prison represents a significant part of the history of the northern conflict.

You cannot be expected to understand or learn about it, if you’re forbidden from putting yourself in another’s shoes.

Nesbitt in stereotypical unionist fury over a book he admits he hasn't even read. Increasingly unionism is donkeys led by asses.

Ok its Northern Ireland.
While I think those people are horrible we should still learn about them. Although I must stress that what we learn should be minimal and I think that they should not be promoted.

Laughable, it shows the desperation in SF/IRA, but I suppose given the census etc they have to try some way to convince the future unicorns that the 'cause' was worthwhile...

Laughable from Unionists yet again.
The same crowd that vented their fury at an Iceland foods supermarket sweep, and also Sainsburys.

If St Patrick's Primary Donaghmore stock this book and also fly their Italian flag then the fury from unionists will reach thunderous proportions.
Schools should only stock books that extol the knowledge of the earth being 6,000 years old and that the unionists are descendants of the lost tribe of Israel. Not forgetting of course that Darwin was in the Ra.

Numerous failed terrorist campaigns are not a conflict.

I have to wonder sometimes about what kids are reading in schools. My boy was reading about kids playing with ouija boards in a school book when he was 9.

As an atheist I can only view that attempt at a put down as an epic failure.

Prods do not change much from generation to generation. Before the Northern Ireland Parliament was suspended in 1972 the Northern Ireland Dept of Education had the power to ban certain books being used in schools. That power was used only in respect of books being used in Catholic schools.

Nesbitt's behaviour should be a warning to all Catholics about Prod attempts to coerce or persuade Catholics into accepting integrated education.

strange how they start crappy threads like this and ignore yet another shooting in a republican area.
Shouldn't you be off moaning about the Catholic Church on other threads?
