PRAGUE (AFP)--U.S. President Barack Obama gave his backing Sunday to Turkey's bid to join the European Union, saying it would wrap the mainly Muslim nation into the European fold. Its accession to the bloc, which has 27 members, would be "an important signal" which would "firmly anchor" Turkey in Europe, said Obama in an address to E.U. leaders at a summit in the Czech capital Prague.

Not sure if Turkey is ready to join the EU yet, what it
still mistreating the Kurds. Besides, most of Turkey is
in Asia. You might as well ask Russia or Israel to join.

Have to agree here i think Obama should butt out of some EU affairs, but the sooner the EU expands and takes in Turkey, Crotia and other countries the better for us all.

well he has to say that doesn't he, Turkey is still a NATO member and a US ally (of sorts) in Iraq, Afghanistan, etc. However his / US opinion / position on the matter are largely a mute point as the matter will be decided by the EU members, many of whom are showing less and less support for same, not to mention there is a growing negativity in Turkey about EU membership.

I cannot see it happening, at least not in the next 10 - 20 years, then again much can change in a month let alone in a decade

Would he take Turkey in as the 51st state? Turkey should never be let into the EU.

Turkey has a population of over 70 millions, and one of the highest unemployment figures compared to the EU. As someone previously said, there are probably 8 million Turks sitting on their suitcases ready to come to the country with the highest social welfare system. Hang on a minute, that's us.

It won't happen so long as Germany is against it.

To compare America and the EU is ridiculous.
I wasn't comparing merely asking would he allow Turkey into the US. Furthermore although the EU and US are very different now if the eurofanatics get their way they are going to start looking very similar.

Obama has no business commenting on in the internal affairs of the EU.

He is of course reading from a script from a teleprompter and hasn't a clue either way.

Maybe the EU could recommend that CUBA be accepted into the North American Union.

It won't happen so long as Germany is against it.

Govt objections will disappear under some quid pro quo or other. Only the people of Europe can stop this lunacy through sustained lobbying of politicians. For years now the EU Commission's own Eurobarometer polls have shown massive and sustained opposition to Turkish accession, including the opposition of the people of Ireland, although not a single member of the Oireachtas has voiced opposition to Turkish membership. Make no mistake but the EU will happily ignore the outcome of its own opinion poll.

Obama should keep his nose out of this one. Honestly, does he not have anything better to worry himself with.

I don't pretend to be expert on the this issue, but as far as i can remember the only policy that George Bush had towards the EU (except ignoring us) was for Turkish membership of the EU.

Bringing a population the size of Turkey into the EU is, frankly, as step too far! And we think we have problems putting the Lisbon Treaty to the people.

to cut through the bull, Obama is saying this to appease the Turks so they will continue their military alliance with the US.

Why shouldn't Obama comment on the EU's policies? Do EU leaders never comment on US policies?

Supporting Turkish membership of the EU has been US policy for a long time now and the EU has been in negotiations over Turkish membership for years.

Obviously continuing the great hypocritical US tradition of ignoring the gross human rights violations of its allies. Yes we can, indeed.
