American Sovereignty Restoration Act of 2017

This bill repeals the United Nations Participation Act of 1945 and other specified related laws.

The bill requires: (1) the President to terminate U.S. membership in the United Nations (U.N.), including any organ, specialized agency, commission, or other formally affiliated body; and (2) closure of the U.S. Mission to the United Nations.

Sponsor: Rep. Rogers, Mike D. [R-AL-3] (Introduced 01/03/2017)
Had this inside another thread elsewhere. Think it deserves its own thread. Mods move if in wrong place. Not sure if here or Foreign Affairs as it is a US Gov thing.

If this happens will UN move to Europe?? What are the implications?

If this goes through then the UN Assembly will presumably decamp from Lower East Side in Manhattan. Perhaps we may put in a pitch to host it in an empty building.

If Nama have nothing suitable UNITE may offer their premises on Merrion Square,

The current abuse of UN conventions by economic migrants, means one thing for western members it either updates its conventions or it becomes irrelevant.....western people aren't taking it anymore.

Funny if the UN signed the debt over to a vulture fund and Airforce One found itself impounded at some foreign airport.

Its kinda unlikely

- having the UN in the US suits the USA just fine.

But if it did happen it would be the end of the UN.....

Nobody sane wants that to happen

- and I don't think DJT does either.....

I'm not a fan of the UN. AFAIK our membership, never having been approved by a referendum, remains legally questionable. Maybe we should leave with the US - once we are paid what is owed to us first.

There is no constitutional requirement for a referendum when Ireland joins an international organisation. The Dail has the legal authority to join. Its called 'representative democracy'.

To the contrary - there is an absolute requirement when that membership fetters the ability of the Government to act independently.

Nope. I recommend you review the Crotty judgement which is the basis for the need for referenda on EU matters (and only EU matters).
