A new in-depth profile of Sarah Palin in Vanity Fair is creating controversy in America. The author has denied that it is an anti-Palin hit-piece:

I couldn't believe these stories either when I first heard them, and I started this story with a prejudice in her favor. I have a lot in common with this woman. I'm a small-town person, I'm a Christian, I think that a lot of her criticisms of the media actually have something to them. And I think she got a bum ride, but everybody close to her tells the same story.
Individually, the stories recounted in the article amount to not much more than tittle tattle and innuendo, and most of the interviews are anonymous. However together they add up to paint a pretty disturbing picture of Palin.

I end up in the living room of Colleen Cottle, who is the matriarch of one of Wasilla’s oldest families, and who served on the city council when Palin was mayor. She says she and her husband, Rodney, will pay a price for speaking candidly about Palin. Their son is one of Todd Palin’s best friends. “But it is time for people to start telling the truth,” Colleen says. She describes the frustrations of trying to do city business with a mayor who “had no attention span—with Sarah it was always ‘What’s the flavor of the day?’ ”; who was unable to take part meaningfully in conversations about budgets because she “does not understand math or accounting—she only knows buzzwords, like ‘balanced budget’ ”; and who clocked out after four hours on most days, delegating her duties to an aide—“but he’ll never talk to you, because he has a state job and doesn’t want to lose it.” This type of conversation is repeated so often that Wasilla starts to feel like something from The Twilight Zone or a Shirley Jackson short story—a place populated entirely by abuse survivors.
Forget the woman's political opinions for a moment (scary as they are). Simply on the basis of her personality she is unfit to be anywhere near power, and the fact that she remains one of the top personalities within the Republican party is terrifying. However, she is hated by the GOP top brass, and hopefully after the Tea Party frenzy of this autumn, the party will come back within the earth's orbit in time for the Presidential nomination campaign, and choose somebody relatively sane like Mitt Romney. Otherwise, if in some horrible parallel universe she became POTUS, we'll be looking at end-of-the-Roman-Empire era stuff.

‎"Early in the 2008 campaign, when John McCain’s aides discovered that Alaska-size gaps existed in Palin’s general knowledge (among those previously unreported: she had no idea who Margaret Thatcher was), they from time to time would give her some books to read in hopes of improving the candidate’s learning curve. On on...e such occasion, Palin accepted the books, set them aside, and for the next 25 minutes was held rapt by one of her three BlackBerrys.

Eventually, an aide asked, “What are you working on?”“I’m reading these great e-mails,” she said, “from the prayer warriors.”On the road, Palin gives “prayer warriors” regular shout-outs. [...] Standing in front of a 50-foot-long American flag, wearing a black leather jacket, Palin thanked prayer warriors in the audience, just as at other events she has thanked them for keeping her “covered” and “providing [a] prayer shield.”

Palin, who was presented as the Obama-destroyer, may be a gift that keeps on giving.

At the very least, she can cause serious disruption in the Republican Party, and send them deeply divided into the election campaign.

Palin is nothing more that a cheer-leader for the ignorant, she is just a celebrity now, ignorant and proud of it - just like her 'followers'.

Not for the upcoming ones, you could put Harding back on the scene and the Democrats would still take a kicking. Where it will hurt them though is if she stands and loses (or in a far less likely scenario, wins) in the primary race.

The only real concrete thing the Tea Partiers have done is pushed moderate Republicans more to the right in their public utterences, McCain being a perfect example.

When it comes to the presedential race however, it's not possible to win without getting the centre. The centre's pretty terrified of the Tea Party and what they're presented to represent.

Story seems perfectly plausible.

On the Thatcher thing, she claims now that she wants to meet Margaret Thatcher, whom she says is her political idol. Yet, if this article is to be believed, she hadn't even heard of Thatcher two years ago! I find that slightly hard to believe, given the idolisation of Thatcher and Reagan amongst US Conservatives, but the truly frightening thing is that it is plausible.

Anybody who's studied Palin the person, on her TV interviews and on some of the short clips posted on this site recently, can only reach the conclusion that the woman suffers from something like ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder). She can spout meaningless generalities about most subjects (something anybody can do just by reading headlines and sub-heads) but ask her a few probing questions that require real knowledge and an insightful thought process and you have the human equivalent of a beached fish.

She's an embarrassment and a sad reflection on a large swathe of the American electorate.

It's worth remembering that no Irish publication could carry a piece like that about an Irish politician: the state's defamation laws don't allow for unsupported statements that damage the reputation of another person, even if the person is a public figure.

Different people will have different views on whether this is a good or bad thing.

... buy still amounts to tittle tattle and innuendo. Palin I would have dismissed back at the time of the last election, in fact I pleaded that be the case. But it is ironic that now she cannot be dismissed. The people who called her 'lip stick pig' etc built her up to take the leapt from the GOP to the Tea Party. They singled her out above McCain and gave her the attention and venom that should have been reserved for a more senior figure. Palin simply took the recognition that idiots gave her and ran with it.

As a politician she is not particularly adriot. But she has courage and initiative and that has given her momentum. Only disengenous morons would not acknowledge that. The tawdry bit of fakery and character assasination in Vanity Fair is no differant than that which we saw in the Presidental elections. It is only proof that the liberal left in the US is now scared sh*tless of her that the media has abandoned Obama and liberals won't face the tough issues faced by the Whitehouse. I doubt Palin can hammer out an unified and coherant agenda for the Tea Party that will ultimitly yeild maximim conservative support, but whatever she does will affect the GOP and very probably the next Presidential election. As of this moment in time Palin looks unbeatable in a Conservative caucus.

.. and the response? Some sour puss meowing from liberal media quarters that have talked about little but the first Ladys great upper arms and her kids since Obama got elected. Sad. The Democrats may well be fecked. I have noticed aswell a quiet bleed of subtle GOP propoganda into P.ie dressed up as leftist criticism of the US. Judging by what has been coming out thus far the Tea Party and GOP are manuvering to place blame for the recession on the Democrats during the Clinton era.

The lack of protection for someone's good name in the US is a situation she took constant advantage of starting with her ex-brother-in-law. Kind of karmic seeing it come back to bite her. In truth there is little new in that piece.

A lot like Mary Coughlan, though to give Coughlan some credit, her time as agriculture Minister was quite good. Since she left that Department she's been little short of a walking PR disaster. She has yet to prove herself in education, but by the time she gets a chance the Government will be wiping shoe-prints from its collective ass, hopefully.

Amen,

She brought it onto herself.

God-awful woman. Serious hatchet job by VF.

Rolling Stone did a number on McCain in the run up to the election, but it was positively sweet compared to this vanity fair article.

She clearly faked her pregnancy.

Between Obama's birth cert and Palin's pregnancy, the deception continues.

The republicans really need to find someone who isnt a figurehead like Palin is to counter the figurehead that is Obama. Between the two of them, they have done more to reduce US politics to its most inane in recent years.
