One of the nastiest despots is thankfully dead at last. Mugabe was a genocidal despot who slaughtered his own people and bankrupted his own country. He was also a racist and dispossessed thousands of white farmers wrecking the country's food supply. The terrible thing was the unwillingness of other African rulers to condemn him.

His wife wasn't much better, she should be swinging from a lamppost

Shopping[edit]
Grace Mugabe is known for her lavish lifestyle, and Western media has nicknamed her "Gucci Grace".[37][18] The Daily Telegraph called her "notorious at home for her profligacy" in coverage of a 2003 trip to Paris,[38] during which she was reported as spending £75,000 (approx US$120,000) in a short shopping spree; and in the years leading up to 2004 withdrew over £5 million from the Central Bank of Zimbabwe.[26] When Grace Mugabe was included in the 2002 sanctions, one EU parliamentarian said that the ban would "stop Grace Mugabe going on her shopping trips in the face of catastrophic poverty blighting the people of Zimbabwe."[39] She faces similar sanctions in the United States.[2]

As it was all over the news I assumed sentient beings knew about it.

He managed to turn a country with a thriving agricultural sector into basket case. Zimbabwe has the potential to grow enough food to feed the planet, but under Mugabe's rule they can't even feed themselves. No wonder Ian Smith is remembered fondly there.

Also, he didn't free Zimbabwe from British colonial rule. Zimbabwe was independent when he took over.

He was so vile that the vile British colonialists gave him a knighthood.

im sure someone else would have managed it
Which Is easy to say, but he did it. He did what Ireland couldn’t, what took SA longer etc. Pre 83 Mugabe genuinely IS a hero, but once in power he was a flamboyantly incompetent at running a country and a brutal dictator.

Indeed, a complex character but I still hope his impending death made him reflect on his subsequent actions - doubtful though, so in lieu of that, I hope his passing was not peaceful.

Thank you mugabe for proving once again to us all that "state socialism" is grand larceny by another name.

every country is different , the European population in SA was much higher, likewise the religious makeup of Ireland complicated things.

Glad he's gone too. Would take issue with the comment about the farmers though. It wasn't a racist act, the argument could be made that they never owned the land in the first place. He shouldn't have handed it over to soldiers and cronies though which is probably why they weren't run properly.

Hey! Don't knock the man. Under his rule the poorest people in Zimbabwe became billionaires (or was it trillionaires?)

... I hope his passing was not peaceful.
I will be less euphemistic. I hope he died roaring. I hope his wife does too.

The brutally was there before he got into power. For example there was massive voter intimidation and violence from ZANU-PF in the 1980 election.

It's also simplistic to say that Mugabe was solely responsible for the fall of the white government too. There was a lot of other actors involved and it was also inevitable.

South Africa was different because it existed for longer, was not completely isolated internationally and the white population was a lot larger.

It inherently was a rasicst act, as they were targeted because of the colour of their skin.

As to whether they owned it, if you go back far enough practically every single piece of land was seized by someone at some time. Property rights is a fairly new concept.

I have no real issue with land distribution although Zimbabwe would have been better off with the white run farms than what they got, but the farmers should be paid market value and yeah of course it shouldn't be handed over to soldiers and cronies.

I suppose you're right but the dispossessed are right to take it back if they can. It wasn't racist though. If the land at the time was colonised by brown people, say Indians, Mugabe would have taken it back off them too.
