Arriving for talks at the Labour Relations Commission (LRC), General Secretary of the National Bus and Rail Union, Michael Faherty, said he hoped a basis could be found for proper and constructive negotiations with Bus Éireann management to end the strike which has grounded the nationwide bus service for two days.
He said they were in a very difficult situation because they had a Labour Court recommendation that had been rejected by 82% of their members. He said they would lift pickets if there was agreement among all parties that they were prepared to sit down and discuss the issues in a constructive way.
Siptu official Willie Noone said that at a bare minimum they were hoping the company would withdraw its threat to employees conditions of employment - and if that was not forthcoming they were not going to make any progress tonight. He described talks which had taken place over the last year as a "sham", adding that staff had been treated in a despicable way.
Bus Éireann Director of Human Resources, Joe Kenny, said they welcomed the opportunity for talks and would engage positively and constructively and apologised again for disruption to customers but said he hoped to bring a speedy resolution to the dispute.
So what will our panel make of this and for good measure thay’ll also be looking at progress in the Croke Park 2 talks. Is a ‘breakthrough’ to be expected on both talks with everything rosy in the garden tomorrow? You can expect a good show tonight …
