Gay rights campaigners have hailed a “major milestone” on the journey to full equality as the Government considers a recommendation to extend marriage rights to same-sex couples. Conservative and Catholic groups said the Constitutional Convention’s recommendation was expected but the result of any referendum on the issue would be far less certain.

Some 79% of members of the 100 strong think-tank voted to recommend that the Constitution be amended; while 19% voted against. The issue will now be debated in the Oireachtas and the Government has four months to say how it will act on the recommendation.

Colm O’Gorman of Amnesty Ireland told the convention it is time for gay parents to be treated as equals.
“I am a man who is married to a man and I have children. I love my children and my children love me and what I look for more than anything else from this republic, from my republic, is that we be treated with respect and with regard, and celebrated on an equal footing with every other parent and family,”
However, Breda McDonald of the Irish Catholic Bishops’ Conference said it is “impossible” to talk of equality between heterosexual marriage and same-sex marriage because only the union of a man and woman can give rise to a child.

So what will Vinny’s panel think of all this? A good discussion is on the cards for tonight’s show …
Also on tonight's show: the Boston bombs and the abortion legislation.

Not more gay talk. Sick to the hole of it. Nothing against gays, but boring. I find lesbians more interesting, but in a bizarre way!

Great op norm.

No interest in the topic but Marc Coleman will be an interesting guest.

Think a smaller but just as angry John McGurk who'll start a row in an
empty house.

I went to a "letting on" Gay marriage oh, must be 14 or so years ago now. I told my mother about my two friends' (let's just call them Adam and Paul) upcoming marriage waiting for an explosion. She bought them a vase and got them a mass card, wishing them a very happy marriage.

Extraordinary woman the mammy. Never judged. Just accepted.

Did she pray for a conversion?

No, the mammy didn't believe in conversions. She had solid fuel heating and she refused point blank to convert to gas. Come to think of it, you a gas man otto?

A friend of my is a lesbian. Very sexy lady. If only I could convert her back, she would be an absolute pleasure to play with.

Yes and of course gay people should be able to get married. They should not I believe be allowed adopt kids.
There's a few heterosexual people I've met over the years who shouldn't be allowed to have care of a fecking rat, let alone their children, but they are. Does that mean that all heterosexual people should not be allowed to adopt?

Kids are entitled to the best there is when there is a choice, that is the ideal, a mother and a father and nothing less. It is selfish of any adult to deprive children of this. Elton John expressed concern some time ago regarding the child he has with his partner, because of this situation and yet he intends to go ahead and have another one. It is the ultimate in selfishness. It is a tragedy when a child loses a mother or father but when a child is deliberately deprived it is totally unfair.
