Luke ‘Ming’ Flanagan, Independent TD Roscommon-South Leitrim https://twitter.com/lukeming
Niamh Lyons , Political correspondent Irish Daily Mail https://twitter.com/niamh_lyons
Joe O Reilly, FG TD Cavan-Monaghan https://twitter.com/joeoreillytd

Independent TD Luke 'Ming' Flanagan admitted today in the Dáil that on two occasions he was to receive penalty points which were then cancelled. On 3 June 2012 he was stopped by a garda for using a mobile phone while driving. He received a fixed penalty notice in the post. A few days later he bumped into a garda sergeant, who told him that he was exempt from penalty points, he said.

On a second occasion he was caught using a mobile phone while driving he was told that he would get penalty points. He casually mentioned this at a subsequent county council meeting he was attending. On his way home he was contacted by "a senior council official" telling him that his penalty points issue had been "sorted out".

Mr Flanagan said that he believed that it was indicative of the culture that exists; he said that the fact that a council official has the confidence to approach gardaí with a view to having the penalty points cancelled is further proof of this. He also questioned how his penalty points information had come to light.

Well, with Luke Flanagan on #VINB talking about one of his favourite subjects, anything can happen. I hope Vinny has one of those machines which will just emit a loud sound if Luke goes overboard. Should be a good show. Let’s just hope Luke is going to talk about the Gardaí and not the conclave …

Clare Daly exposes details of Garda wiping penalty points: arrested and story leaked.

Ming calls Gardai corrupt: penalty points quashed story leaked.

Should we be concerned?

In this cesspit of a country, if a person can gain a little advantage for themselves, fair play to them.

If I had the chance to get penalty points written off my licence, I would do it. So would everyone here. Ease up on the bullsh1t lads.

(I don't have any points on my licence)

(Well, not anymore at least)

So no hope of a little bit of humility from Flanagan then, no? Shame.

I trust that Ming is going to make a statement to the Gardai about the senior county official in Roscommon County Council ?

I wouldn't. If I deserve them I deserve them.

This kind of perverting the course of justice is criminal, and poisons the atmosphere around the gardaí and the legal system.

What other crimes can they "take care of"?

Lydia doing the papers? TV3 having real difficulties getting guests, methinks?

Lydia has a watching brief on the Quinns ... she may be there to talk about them or the Conclave. She seems to spend a fair amount to time in the Four Courts. Who knows what she's going to talk on, but there's somebody else doing the papers the more usual way, afaik.
