Viviane Reding has scored another coup in her fight for the European consumer.

BBC NEWS | Business | Cost of texting abroad comes down

Roaming charges are now capped at

SMS = 11c
Make a call from anywhere to anywhere = 43c
Receive a call from anywhere = 19c
Data = 1 euro / MB (Meteor previously charged 10 euro/MB)

And now you must be charged by the second, instead of rounded up to the nearest minute.

The mobile networks - some of the worlds biggest and most powerful companies - faught like cats to prevent this, but Reding bullied it through.

Is Viviane Reding the best ever EU commissioner?

In fairness, the end of the roaming charges scam was initially pushed by a group of MEPs which included Simon Coveney.

Reding took the ball and ran with it though.

An example of how Europe can work for us and our pockets

I was abroad on business last summer and (similarly) needed to do a small bit of work while there. My bill was €300 more than it would usually be for the month

And she was able to achieve it without the Lisbon treaty too. Fair play to her.

EU Commission have announced that they are to fast track the abolition of roaming charges from next year and to provide a single communications market for the entire EU i.e. no more Vodafone Ireland, UK etc with separate tariffs etc but just an EU wide offering.

Just another sick bid at centralisation and crushing commerce. Watch normal rates skyrocket.

A benevolent dictator if ever I saw one. Who needs parliaments elected by universal sufferage, independent courts, written constitutions and all that.

If this is the same Viviane Reding who wants discriminatory gender quotas on corporate boards - then the answer would be a resounding NO.

More good work the European institutions are doing for its citizens as Commission has announced plans to fully abolish all roaming charges within the EU, as well as move towards a single mobile phone market...........

The European Commission is proposing to scrap mobile phone roaming charges across Europe as part of a raft of measures to reform the telecoms market.

...

Under the plans, companies would be banned from charging for incoming calls from July 2014. All other roaming charges would be scrapped by 2016.

Mobile providers will then either have to charge customers the same prices for phone calls across the EU, or allow them to switch providers for the period they are abroad, without changing their Sim card.

... under the new proposals, companies will need one authorisation to operate in all countries, rather than 28 separate ones.
BBC News - Europe plans to end mobile phone roaming charges

About time and a vindication of further consolidation of the European Union. The Commission and Parliament however should go a lot further including creating a single telephone network, with the ability to ring anyone in Europe, land line or mobile, and be charged the same rate as if you were dialing a local number.

More good news for European citizens as the European Parliament approves legislation that abolishes all roaming charges within the EU by the end of 2015:

The European Parliament has voted to scrap the roaming fees charged for using a mobile phone while abroad.

Under the wide-ranging telecoms reforms, the cost of making a call or downloading internet data in another EU country will be the same as at home.

The change is due to take effect from 15 December next year. It still requires approval from EU governments.

Some consumers have faced bills for thousands of pounds after falling foul of current high roaming charges.

In recent years the EU has legislated to lower the costs, so telecoms operators have been forced to cap their fees.

A European Commission survey in February suggested that 94% of Europeans limit their use of the web when travelling in Europe because of the cost of mobile roaming.

The package was adopted by 534 votes to 25.

Another benefit of the European Union. :)

Having met her, I can say she is a very competent lady. But very much a politician. Trying to get a straight answer out of her was like trying to pick mercury up with a fork..

In fairness, you'll now have more "supranational" state control over the mobile phone networks, because this was a move by the state to increase its power rather than to walk it back. Deregulating would have achieved the same effect, but no, the EU doesn't do that.

So how does opaqueness translate to being "competent"?

She was competent to negotiate a difficult Q and A. She was competent to hold a bunch of powerful EU positions. She was competent to bring forward substantial Data Protection legislation. She's no Brian Cowen.

Stop nit picking.

To fast track it - from the end of next year! That's almost 2 years! Things do move slowly in this communications business, but only when it is to our benefit.

Why the wait - it is a rip off, and should be abolished now.

They should keep on pushing them to bring down these charges now.
