Recalling 1990 gives us a useful perspective - The Irish Times - Fri, Oct 29, 2010

TWENTY YEARS ago, we were about to enter the final week of the election campaign that delivered Ireland’s first woman president.....

I remember...so well...answering the door to an FF canvasser...and assuring him that irrespective of late night phone calls to the Aras I had no intention on God's planet of ever voting for Brian. He went away...comforted(??)

20 years later I will no doubt have his son calling to my door(or his lackeys posting his "stuff")..so much has changed and so much has in fact stayed the same!
20 years ago I worked in an acute Dublin Hospital with beds closed...the health budget slashed...cos we were apparently living " beyond our means"......!!

Oh Good Jays*s.....nowt has changed...or has it???

I would seriously like 20 years perspective without the presence of that long-haired misogynist, and I am male. The country would be a better place. Personally, I think he is demented, seriously.

Oooh are you a spitting blogger?:
but we should, in as far as possible, try to state the facts without worrying what the bloggers will spit back.
I'm kind of bored by him now mostly. Same old same old with him these days.

ARA...not all he says is bad...( a lot perhaps..but not all).
He may be right...the last 20 years have seen bigger change in Ireland than has ever been seen!..politically...(NI...female presidents...Bertie...et al)...financially and economically(there can be no doubt)...but owt else??????.social inequalities.....poverty(in real terms)...inclusion.....???

Take the long haired yoke out of the equation and tell me despite the enornous changes...what has changed?????

I can' t stand him either, Correlli and his simplistic, right-wing, religious nonsense

I don't think that the notion that there might be a spiritual dimension to life is either simplistic or right-wing; never mind "religious ". And as far as I see, that's all he posits.

Wish we would qualify for the world cup again. That was fun.
That was the most unbelievable sporting Summer that we ever had - the country did go barmey for those weeks.

What did ever happen that Robinson woman....?!

(It is impossible, I realise, to make a point like this without appearing to be an apologist for the manner of our governance of the past two decades; but we should, in as far as possible, try to state the facts without worrying what the bloggers will spit back.)
Ha ha. How true that is..

I think though, Waters may have written the piece a few months early. By mid-December, we'll have a better benchmark to compare with the 90's.

My own memory of the early 90's is that it was an absolute blast. Was just out of college and was lucky enough to get a job. Even my college buddies who emigrated all had a blast too, taking the world by storm*. Of course, the prevailing mood (in the media and elsewhere) was still pessimistic and negative, pretty much in line with the unemployment rate. '94 was a turning point though. I'm sure the world cup had a lot to do with it.

What ever happened to the poster of that name?

This could well be the way forward for FF- perspective, reflecting on the important things, a modern day version of comely maidens at the cross roads ? I wish Waters would concentrate on writing songs for Eurovision.

Just thinking about it makes me smile. The whole country on a massive happy buzz, with none of the begrudgery or cycnicism, just everyone in the country letting it rip.

Think Robinson is coming back soon.

And start winning the Eurovision!
At least Waters tried. It's his one saving grace in my eyes that he went for that despite knowing the complete slagging he'd get for it - and deservedly so, the song was rubbish! But at least he tried.

How are we ever going to win it again fluffy? We'll have to make ourselves very popular with the balkan block.

I'll find a way Mar, a rock ethno song in Russian with all sorts of colour!
