'West Cork rebels and Bobby Sands didn't fight for the blacks.

Bit of a bizarre story here from the Rebel County. A pensioner with no previous convictions was ordered to pay 600 Euros to a local hospice after a racist outburst at a foreign national who was viewing a house next door to the defendant. After giving the bemused onlooker the finger he said:

'Go back to your own f*cking country you f*cking black ‘n*gger. I will not have peeping Toms in my doorway. The Irish did not fight in West Cork for the blacks. Bobby Sands did not die for the blacks’.

The man in question tried to excuse himself by claiming a heart condition he suffers from is the reason for his 'intolerance'.

It comes as the Irish immigrant support centre in Cork found that 45 per cent of respondents experienced discrimination in at least one area of their everyday life. Although this is probably a case of an older generation's ignorance, Fiona Finn, chief executive of Nasc, told the Irish Times:

'We’re most particularly concerned about the black African community – their perceptions and experience of racism come out much higher than the other migrant communities. And one of the most striking things is that eight out of 10 people who have experienced racist incidents haven’t reported [them] and that points to a systemic failure within the system'.

Regards Sands, here's an interesting article and interview about how ANC activists viewed him and his struggle back in the day.

“We identified with the IRA’s struggle against British domination,” he says. “So when we read about the action of Bobby Sands, that was when we embarked on our own hunger strike. We saw in Sands a true comrade, a person with whom we fully identified. We used the example of Sands in our arguments when we were taking decisions about what we did'.

So lads and ladies from all over Ireland, do you think there is a problem with racism in your town, village or city? Apologies to the Corkmen and women for highlighting this case in your wonderful county, but just curious to attitudes and perceptions across Ireland.

Racism is a big issue in this country. Very many people experience it on a daily basis. You'd hardly notice this from the media. I think its a valid thread. I know in work it comes up a bit. Not the outright racism like the above example, but the more insidious type - boasting about refusing lifts from african taxi drivers etc etc. It needs to be addressed before it becomes a serious issue, because multi-culturalism isn't just going to go away.

It won't go away, but where does it work?

I am no lover of the multi-cultural model however, deliberately avoiding black taxi drivers etc. is bang out of order! My experience is that they are more polite, better dressed, do not smoke in their cars and have better maintained cars than their Irish colleagues.

The auld wan in Cork needs to bloody well cop on! Does he consider Simon Zebo to be a n!!gger who should feck of back to his own country?

The black taxi drivers are also seemingly less racist than the white ones.

Or is it racist to say that?

Why did he have to pay €600. Is it a crime to insult someone? What was the charge exactly?

Did you not read the link?

He was summonsed for using "threatening abusive and insulting language".

Yes, that is a crime, it's a public order offence. S6 of the relevant 1994 Act.

Well lets jump to conclusions. I guess Every one can be defined by one single action.
Which probly explains why Sinn Fein get such a hard time.

I hope the Gardai never find out about this site... We'd have the national debt paid off before lunch time

Does that mean you won't help us build the gallows?
