I'm surprised and a saddened to read that Cistercian College Roscrea (MSJ) is calling it a day. True they lost to Gonzaga in the Schools Rugby Cup on Wednesday but this is a bit of an extreme reaction!

Some interesting names among the school's alumni:-

Brian Cowen – Former Taoiseach

Conor Brady – Former Editor of The Irish Times

Cormac Bourke - Editor of the Sunday Independent

Dick Spring – Former international rugby player and Tánaiste

David Andrews – Former Minister for Foreign Affairs

Jim Glennon – Former international rugby player and former TD.

Barry Cowen - Fianna Fáil TD

Mr Justice Vivian Lavan (RIP) – former High Court judge

Willie Mullins – Racehorse trainer and former jockey

Séamus Hennessy – All-Ireland medallist with Tipperary (Hurling)

Gavin Duffy – International rugby player

No love for Gary Halpin, an Olympian no less! Or was he Rockwell College?

I used to hate the away trips to play against Roscrea. And the trips to Rockwell too. Hours on a school coach just to play 80 minutes of rugby.

On a more serious note it is sad to see a school as old as that having to close.

Will make a nice hotel.
Institutional buildings do not tend to convert well into hotels.

On the closure of boarding schools it is importent to remember that such schools serve a vital need in society for some categories of family.

Eugene Hardiman too, judge.

You could add me to that list.

At least they confirmed my atheism.

It is indeed sad, but in my day there were 60 guys signing up to first year. This number dropped to nine this year.

They are trying to keep it alive but I can't see it happening. I am not sure the past men have the money to keep it on life support.

In any case it will go with religion the way of the dodo.

He's not ex-CCR. I think he was Rockwell.
