What is a quango? And what are the examples?

I've heard so much about "quangos" that it got to the stage where I was afraid to ask the above question. Except, when I finally did, nobody could give me a straight answer. Eventually (after questioning ten people), I was told a quango was a quasi-nongovernmental-organisation.
When I asked for examples, I was told FAS and HSE, but to my reckoning these are governmental organisations.

Maybe someone can clear this up.

QUANGO stands for Quasi Automomous Non-Governmental Organisation.

Ombudsman would be a well known example of a QUANGO. There are hundreds of these things in Ireland and no need for most of them.

The civil service, charities and voluntary associations used to do a lot of the work taken over by quangos. Many quangos perform one off tasks or tasks that need only be done intermittently. That suggests there is no need for those to go on year after year with annual budgets in the millions,so the government should be abolishing them or consolidating their functions. But the problem for the government is that quangos mean lots of jobs for the boys,a favourite constituency of Bertie.

A list of over 170 quangos is set out below.Given the need for spending cuts in the coming mini-budget,which ones would you like to see consolidated into groups or abolished outright?

Thanks, I get it now. A lot of those listed above are actually still run by civil servants, but I understand the issue where "Advisory Boards" and "Boards of Management" have been created to facilitate the jobs for the boys/girls syndrome.

If you were to get rid of them, it would be to absorb their duties and functions back into their parent departments, but yes, it would cut alot of waste and costs as regards to the senior appointments associated with them.

Thanks

Jeez, this site loads very slowly. I responded to the Op with a list supplied by 'patslatt'. Ya have to then google them. I know, it's tedious but, this is a good site to get some information. The list and my thanks, for this was posted in 2009. So, I haven't done it but.......FOI ( costs money!) Check other posts (P.ie) But if you haven't done it yet, well, you are probably as lazy as me :p. Not that much a regular poster. I do leech, well look!

There are a lot and a lot could be gotten rid of, but it won't have the budgetary impact people think it will have.

People confuse what quangos spend and what they cost.

A lot of quangos have their own income stream, and the ones the spend the big bucks are generally just spending the capital, health or social welfare budget.

For instance, the bulk of Fas's €1bn budget is the payments made to course participants. If they weren't in Fas, they'd still be getting this money on the dole.

You could get rid of them all, but you probably wouldn't save any more than a few hundred million.

Ok, I have up to 8mp, courtesy of Eircom. This site loads far too slow ATM. Anyone else have to log off and then log in? Off topic I know. What's up?

But you would get rid of the salaries, expenses of employees and the cost of the crony board members. The sooner this dysfunctional organisation populated with vindictive, incompetent apratnicks is disbanded the better.

IRELAND'S QUANGOCRACY

How many? One study says more than 800.

What do they spend? About €13 billion a year.

Are they accountable? Are you kidding?

How many quangocrats? There are an estimated 5,784 appointments to the 482 national bodies

Best paid? Probably Jim Nicholson (Refugee Appeals Tribunal), who earned €780,000 in five years

Worst performing? The Blood Transfusion Supply Board was a shambles

Biggest? The Health Services Executive runs the entire health service

Most obscure? An Choimisuin Logainmeacha, which translates place names

You could. All I am saying is that it wouldn't save that much money.

I heard an interview on RTE with the head of the Board for focáil - their role, under social partnership was to ensure that employers did not discriminate. Interviewer: " So, did you find this is a large problem". Reply: "No, we found its a very rare problem". Now, you or I might wonder what the purpose of an Bórd Focáil is but you'd be wrong. They are producing protocols to advise employers who don't discriminate how to avoid discriminating. Yes Minister.

The Private Security Authority - regulates alarm installers, and has successfully removed competition in that sector from ordinary electricians. Should be top of the bonfire imho.

Nope. It is now an offence to install an alarm (for someone else) if you are not registered with the PSA, which costs a hefty chunk of money, which has had the effect of pushing ordinary electricians out of that business because it's not worth their while paying up for occasional work.

I will tell you what a quango is. I know of one person who runs a thrift shop and that person is on the board of the n.r.a. That persons father put up posters for f.f. At election time. That is the qualifications you need to be on a quango. I would not have known that only for sen. Shane ross. @k38 per annum. Berties life partner is on a quango. Why you may ask? Because she was berties girlfriend.
