What is it with RTE and misery porn?

What is it with RTE and what I would describe as misery porn? I am listening now to an RTE radio 1 documentary about euthanasia. It is a thoughtful documentary, and an important topic, but it got me to thinking that everytime I turn on RTE radio 1 or watch it on TV there is always the topic of cancer or suicide, misery every day of every week. If I turn on Ray Darcy there's always some misery story on, Joe Duffy is the maudlin capital of Montrose and then we have Tubridy who always has some horrific tragic story on week after week. Shouldn't our national broadcaster also cater for those of us who turn on the telly or the radio to be entertained or informed about something other than the horrors that some people have the misfortune to experience.

Was Dave McSavage correct all those years ago when he thought up of this skit?

That sort of stuff cheers up a lot of people in that they may believe they themselves are in a bad position but there are not as badly off as the poor old dear in the story .

Its a bit weird but humans are wired that way .

Sure don’t we laugh at what we are scared of all the time . Why do you think we find our politicians so hilarious . Its because we are scared stiff of them .

Dial a nutter, its exploitation of the mentally feeble, just like U.S. afternoon talk shows.

I rarely watch RTE, but when I do there's always some cancer story or death, or motor neurone disease sufferer on. I don't mean to make light of these topics, far from it, but for the love of God, surely a station that receives so much money off the taxpayer and from advertising can think up of something more entertaining. I mean, the Joe Duffy whine line was grand, you could avoid it, but now we have Joe Duffy 2.0 in the form of Darcy. Its too much!! Do they want us all to top ourselves!

Its not something a national broadcaster should be doing . Perhaps a more commercially minded broadcaster but not from a station benefiting from License money .

Joe is kinda sick guy with his man of the people schtick........

It lets people wallow in misery without discussing the conditions that created this misery: By the Likes of FGFF and abetted by RTE and people like Duffy who normalise it.

Considering how privileged RTE insiders are maybe it is a way of compensating for this and of showing that they are caring without much consequence or effort on the part of themselves.
There are also those of the 'there but for the grace of God go I' brigade who enjoy listening to such stuff.
Then there is Joe Duffy who seemed to have developed some weird fetish for this sort of stuff. I wonder is there treatment he can avail of. I worry about the man.

D'Arcy's obsession with mental health is grating. Bringing it out into the open is one thing but focusing on it almost exclusively is actually not good for the nation's mental health and is turning every second person into a psychiatrist diagnosing each other with conditions.
