Another €1m spent in Oberstown on Second Set of Doors in 3 Years
Article in Irish Mail on Sunday 5 May

Almost €1 million was spent by the State this year on installing 150 steel doors throughout the Oberstown facility to replace doors broken by teenagers during violent incidents. Minister Zapone confirmed that the original doors were deemed unfit for purpose due to unforeseen issues including willful damage by young people. Some of the existing STEEL doors were replaced - so the "young people" managed to damage them as well!

Will the upgraded steel doors withstand the energies of the young people?

Almost €1 million was spent by the State this year on installing 150 steel doors throughout the Oberstown facility to replace doors broken by teenagers during violent incidents. Minister Zappone confirmed that the original doors were deemed unfit for purpose due to unforeseen issues including willful damage by young people. Some of the existing STEEL doors were replaced - so the "young people" managed to damage them as well!

Will the upgraded steel doors withstand the energies of the young people?
Other issues:
"The Mail on Sunday revealed earlier this year the continuing issues at the facility including high rates of sick leave among staff, the number of staff leaving their roles, and staff who have been seriously injured in the course of their duties.

A total of 106 staff have been injured over the past three years ...Staff have also been threatened with a weapon in a number of these incidents. The centre has been the subject of rioting, fires and damage in recent years, while Ms Zappone has consistently refused to release a report by independent auditors on issues of concern.......

The annual cost of keeping an offender in Oberstown is €383,574 or €1,050 a day. The average yearly cost to house an inmate in Portlaoise, Ireland's only maximum security jail, is €97,124, the Irish prison service said
.

There are about 50 detainees in Oberstown Children Detention Campus. We are living in a society that is "caring and compassionate" not to mention "non-judgmental and non-moralizing" and we have learned from the dark lessons of Ireland's past. Have we indeed?
