Who do you think should be nominated to the Seanad?

Following the resignation of Martin McAleese from the Seanad on the 4th February, there is now a casual vacancy among the Taoiseach's nominees. This vacancy can be filled at any time by the Taoiseach. Some names from outside the political spectrum have already been mentioned as possible nominees while others are suggesting that it may go to a party political appointment.

I can only say who shouldn't be nominated. Unsuccessful election candidates or defeated election candidates.

Agreed. There have already been suggestions that should the FG Meath Easy by-election candidate be unsuccessful, he/she will be nominated. First of all the vacancy should not be left that long and secondly, someone of equal standing to Martin McAleese should be nominated. Perhaps a representative from Northern Ireland but overall, we need someone who brings expertise.

A qualified economist is something which is quite lacking in the Oireachtas. Or perhaps someone like Paul Sommerville who has shown an interest in becoming involved in politics?
Richard Bruton is Oxford-educated economist.

Would this be the same individual who bought shares in Anglo, BoI, AIB, CRH, McInerney Builders in the last decade ?

Not a great advertisement for Oxbridge economics....

He should have gone to the LSE alongside Da Bert.....(excuse my sarcasm)....

I know and his MA focused on Irish public debt! Indeed, Senator Seán Barrett works in the economics department at TCD. It's just about trying to get an idea of what sort of person deserves to be nominated. In the past, it was custom to have a Senator from Northern Ireland. Should this continue?
