Well since the foundation of the stae, like him or loath him (and I detest the bollex) it has to be De Valera, because if he had been executed in 1916 (I think the real reason he was spared was that he was considered completely insignificant by Maxwell! Don't forget IIRC Thomas Clarke was an American citizen also) or if he had been killed in the civil war, the country's destiny would have been altered considerably! Collins had he survived may have been finished politically by the 1930s.
I would put O'Connell ahead of him and Parnell would be close to Dev in importance, but still behind O'Connell!
So I throw it open, it deserves a poll really!
Any other contendas - Haughey, Fitzgerald, Reynolds, Aherne, Lynch, Kenny, Biffo, in giant terms they are mere pygmies!

For me Daniel O'Connell is the greatest politician that this country has ever produced.

The only candidate who comes close to O'Connell is John Hume (the second greatest Irish politician).

O'Connell effectively invented mass participation politics this went with Irish people to the USA (democratic Party), Britain and Austarlia (the trade union movement and the Labour party)!

Most senior surviving officer of 1916, president of the executive, walked out of the Dail after it surrendered the republic, founder of FF, founder of a newspaper, undid the treaty as Taoiseach, drafted a constitution which recognised minority religions such as Jewish faith in 1937, kept the country of the war, impact on UN, President...
The question hardly needs to be asked. But like South Africa, the question really is who is the country's second most important politician?

Haughey. He liberated us all from believing the State-sanctioned lies and hypocrisy. He set us free as did the Pharaoh free the chosen people.

never again will we be sheep

There can be no question, in terms of the time since independence and events leading to that independence, he is the man, a very clear head and shoulders above anyone else.
