Who have we to thank for the Ireland we have today - the modern progressive one, loved and respected as much as any nation in the world? Mind you them foreigners wouldn't be fully nuanced wrt some of the Apartheidal aspects of our society, of course!

Who do you reckon and why?

TK, Mary, Sean, Leo??????????????????????????????

Modern Ireland came out of the Taoiseach-ship of Sean Lemass, and if anyone should take the credit, it would be him. It was him who gave TK Whittaker his chance.

Jack Lynch kept us out of the Northern Ireland conflict, and eventually fulfilled John Hume's vision of an Agreed Ireland.

So among politicians Lemass and Hume, then Lynch, Fitzgerald and Haughey to a lesser extent, then Ahern, Bruton, Reynolds and others.

TBH hard to think of many ahead of us!
Through foreign eyes of course and our ability to fool them and at times ourselves, I reckon we are the untouchable world champs at that!
