Well growth is only one measure of a successful society or economy, the alternatives are very negative for happiness, personal freedom and more.

It didn't take long before the islamophobics came along.

Anyhow, moving on.

Democracy suffers the same problem as other forms of government. It gets bought of and hijacked etc.

Western democracies are run now for corporate entities rather than the nations that they were formed upon. It's not even kosher or halal to talk about nation states anymore.

Democracies need to be more than just about making a political entity open for business.

They exist solely to serve a nation. Which is of course problematic thinking in 2018.

You had 3 minutes max to read the article but you prefer rushing in with glib remarks.

Nobody calls democracy perfect.
But it's the best system we have.
But needs vast improvement over the system of excessive numbers of single transferable votes which make TDs behave like councillors instead of parliamentarians who look after the national interest. There should be a limit of two votes to limit the number of mostly useless small parties and footloose independents.

Democracy isn't perfect, especially with regard to the brexit referendum whose result was a dreadful mistake.

See Why Democracy Doesn’t Deliver – Foreign Policy

The linked article isn't as bleak as its title suggests and offers a large number of remedies for the failings of liberal democracies. Many of these failings are evident in Ireland and many of the proposed remedies should be considered by our politicians.
I'm sure everyone will be happy to learn we are already doing one of the things recommended in the paper:
Third, in order to improve the quality of lawmaking, officeholders should be paid salaries competitive with those of private sector leaders, as well as performance bonuses. In the private sector, higher compensation is thought to act as an incentive for higher-quality performance. But few nations apply the same principle when it comes to compensating lawmakers and other leaders.
wouldn't you know...

Tell all those millions who perished under both the Nazi and Communist regimes about how dictatorships are so much better than democratic societies I'm sure they would love to hear it.

Not for the majority who voted for it.
