Why was Mary Mitchell O’Connor appointed to Cabinet ?

Mary Mitchell O’Connor was a rural schoolteacher - who after the breakdown of her marriage, migrated to Dun Laoghaire where in addition to being a school principal - she attracted some sinecures on various local enterprise bodies

She had an ignominious start to her first term in the Dáil in 2011

In May 2016...she got promoted to Cabinet
Enda Kenny to blame for Mary Mitchell O

A presentation she gave backfired and TDs turned on her. There were “fireworks” between TDs and Mitchell O’Connor, who tried to leave the meeting a number of times.
...
“At the PP meeting, the week of the budget, as a minister, you do not go in unprepared. And she appeared to be so, in comparison to Leo (Varadkar) and Simon (Coveney), who both gave comprehensive briefings as to what they were doing,” one senior Cabinet minister told me.
...“It was embarrassing, to be honest. She managed to get up everyone’s nose so quickly because her phone wouldn’t work. The gulf in class from the two lads was incredible,” ...
...Some people in Fine Gael, like Michelle Mulherin, have put the attacks on Mitchell O’Connor down to gender. But the willingness of TDs to kick lumps out of a senior minister is nobody’s fault but Enda Kenny’s, the man who appointed her in the first place.

Her promotion to Cabinet was of some surprise, but the decision to put her into the economically sensitive post of jobs, enterprise and innovation shocked many more, given her distinct lack of business experience.
What qualities deemed her worthy of elevation to Cabinet so soon ...and Enterprise at that ?

Seems she wasn't doing well at the recent FG meeting. Can't see any logical reason why she here she is.

The title of the article "Enda to blame ..." is typical of the Irish media. When a woman screws up they look for a man to blame. They blamed Heather Humphreys blunders on Kenny as well.

FG has 3 TDs in Dun Laoghaire and none of them are prizes. But one of them had to be made a Minister. Dunno why he chose that particular ministry though.

Only joined FG in 2009 having been a PD councillor. Two terms in Dun Laoghaire as a PD councillor on a vote base of 2,000 votes.

Seems to have more problems leaving meetings and public buildings than gaining entrance to them. She's only 57. I'm sure she'll get the hang of it.

They knew that Lucinda was going to jump ship at some stage so needed another blonde for the photos? You know what it is like these days with the quotas.

Probably all of the above.
More to do with FG obsession with optics & spin than her competence or ability

The standard of the women ministers is very poor, even by the low standards of the rest of the cabinet. Zappone is the only one who appears competent of her brief (expenses greed notwithstanding). Though Children is an easy enough brief I suppose ... even Frances seemed competent at that one.

Ask your question a different way...who in FG, or the entire shallow party political gene pool for that matter, would be any better?

Despite Mary Harney's assertion that if we paid more than peanuts we'd get more than more than monkeys, our political parties are, by and large and across gender boundaries, idiots with the cunning to rise to the top AND pursue policies that enrich the already rich on the basis that if they're rich they MUST be smart.

Don't expect Mary to be doing too many presentations from here on out. At least the FG TDs took exception to her capers at that internal meeting. Sounded like it was pretty heated.

Writing her name in big letters on the side of her car was one of the Cabinet's better decisions.

I'd say that's about 2,000 more votes than you ever got. By the way, how many votes did she get in the general election?
