Terribly shocking, but hard to see if this man was unarmed during the scuffle on the ground.

An eye witness said that he didn't see Sterling with gun but that the police may have pulled something that looked like a gun from his pocket after he was killed.

It goes back to the point that Jesse Williams made his speech last week that police in the USA can diffuse, de-escalate and disarm white people every day but they cannot do it when black or Hispanic people are involved.

Timberlake wrote a tweet about the speech praising Williams and then faced comments about what Williams called the expropriation of Black culture and music by white people - basically that Timberlake made his money from singing black music etc. It was probably a bit over the top as Timberlake was supporting Williams.

Why were the police called to the scene in the first place?

I'm sure there's a reasonable explanation for this, American police are known for they're cool heads when dealing with non whites.

Looks like they have him down and have his arms pinned when the cop pulls his gun, and then we hear the shots.

yes
Did they not have batons....tasers? Is shooting somebody several (if reports are accurate) times the only option for subduing them?

For God's Sake! Nearly all "white" musicians sing "black" music. Everything that can be described as Jazz or Soul has it's origin in Black Music, and Rock' n Roll too. Electronica is the only exception.

The only audible instruction from the police was to get on the ground, i'm sure if he was armed you would have heard "drop your weapon" - if he was found to be armed later when restrained on the ground I doubt he was in any position to use it?

Bringing a baton or a taser to a gunfight wouldn't be very prudent.

What are the two sounds (shots?) before the video/audio has him getting on the ground?

There's a low crack followed by "get on the ground, get on the ground" followed by another low crack sound, which sound different to the shots we hear after he's on the ground.

And nobody ever complained about Charlie Pride singing C&W.

I feel no sympathy for any person black or white who physically challenge police officers who carry guns.

Guessing, but possibly a taser being fired. You can see the one cop had it out and then reholstered it after Mr. Sterling was tackled to the ground.
