The Guardian held a live web-chat this lunchtime with Julian Assange of Wikileaks

One question by achanth might have been initially scoffed at

Mr Assange,
have there ever been documents forwarded to you which deal with the topic of UFOs or extraterrestrials?
Assange in his response refers to many "weirdos" who get in touch about UFOs.

Julian Assange:
Many weirdos email us about UFOs or how they discovered that they were the anti-christ whilst talking with their ex-wife at a garden party over a pot-plant. However, as yet they have not satisfied two of our publishing rules.
1) that the documents not be self-authored;
2) that they be original.
So, that would seem all fine and well, "weirdos" try to show Wikileaks proof of aliens.

But his subsequent remark is likely to ring more than one imaginary alarm bell this afternoon.

However, it is worth noting that in yet-to-be-published parts of the cablegate archive there are indeed references to UFOs.

Probably a reference to unidentified missile launches in Iran or N Korea.

There are already documents in existence relating to UFO's over nuclear bases etc. It could just be more of the same military type, we don't know what's happening stuff.

Exciting to think there might be big information out there that we dont know . I wonder what the exact details are? There is a lot of documents in the public domain already about UFO's, one of the more facsinating cases is Randelsham Forest in England

Are US embassies likely to know more than the rest of us about this?

Fear not good citizen, mankind is safe, for President Putin is the protector of mother earth. He has a BUK anti-aircraft system to hand that will shoot anything out of the sky.

But in case the aliens do manage to land, Putin has made preparations. While taking off his shirt with one hand, he used his other hand to introduce draconian laws restricting the rights of aliens. And all the time he was giving a tacit nod of approval to mobs of concerned skinheads roaming the streets looking for aliens. And just to be safe the definition of what qualifies as 'alien' in Russia is being broadened by the day.

And if they hide out in apartment blocks? Well, Putin has a fix for that too. Even if they are not in the building.

He's also passed a "Federal Law for the Purpose of Protecting Children from Information Advocating Alien Propaganda" while at his instigation there will henceforth be an Earthling** Pride Festival held in Moscow every year.

Which is the more likely scenario?

-UFO's are exactly that. simply earth-bound things that are so-far unexplained, such as secret aircraft tests, weather phenomena etc.

-An alien civilization which can travel at close to light speeds, or 'warp' in to some type of 'sub-space' in order to travel trillions of miles of space does so in order to then ponce around our airspace in tin boxes that are not much advanced on what is already in the possession of a species who are impressed with themselves for having put a few of their members briefly on to their own moon.

well, we'd be stupid enough to do it....why do you think aliens wouldn't be stupid either.
in fact, it might be smart move not to risk any highly advanced aircraft when scouting a primative world, when a primative aircraft would suffice

Why do they have to be made out of tin?

I didn't mean that literally. I meant that for any civilization that could do interstellar travel, the sort of feats performed by so-called UFOs would actually be kids stuff. They are not far from what we know we can do now. They ARE a million miles off the tech' that would be required for interstellar travel.

Anyone falling for the UFO nonsense should read up a bit about what interstellar travel would actually entail. It's quite likely that in our lifetimes we will see craft that can fly at tens of thousands of MPH, pull off seemingly impossible maneuvers, render themselves invisible etc. It is also quite likely that we will NEVER travel to another star.
