Zika virus, serious threat or another health scare

Not sure if people have been following it, but we were discussing how important it is they get a vaccine on the HPV thread, but as this disease is now rapidly expanding it deserves a thread all of it's own. Particularly as the WHO has declared it a Global Health Emergency. Are they overeacting because they were critised in relation to Ebola. We've been here before with other diseases like Swine fly.

Zika-linked condition: WHO declares global emergency - BBC News

Anyone here going to the Rio De Janeiro festival in Brazil for example and is this going to affect them?

The WHO says:

The WHO alert puts Zika in the same category of concern as Ebola.

It means research and aid will be fast-tracked to tackle the infection

Ebola is pretty scare and this Zika seems to be spreading very quickly.

It wasn't a global emergency until a vaccine was almost ready.......

Link please?

When Brazil has had to tell pregnant women not to attend the carnival in Rio I think we can be sure there really is a problem.

The tourist revenue lost will be enormous. It's not only the relatively few women who will actually be pregnant at that time who can't go, it will also be their families, and then of course couples who are simply thinking of starting a pregnancy within the following months or even year will probably not go either - because nobody knows for sure how long the risk remains after contamination.

That's how Ebola has started up again in west Africa after it had been officially declared over : it seems to have been sexually transmitted in survivors' sperm. Obviously Ebola is far more serious to the general population, but it's not an encouraging example if you intended to go to Rio and you're thinking of starting a family.

(No word on what the numbers tell us?)

RTE were reporting this evening that of the two cases, one is a man and the other is an older woman. Both have recovered fortunately. Are they Brazilians? Another upside of inward migration? Do we need to impose health testing at ports of entry?

A neighbour is a on the staff at this place Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine which is probably one of the premier research places in the world - Bill Gates was there last week chucking money at the place.

We were chatting over the weekend and got onto zika - not their own field but they said it looks pretty nasty and worrying for the areas involved.
They also said that the tinfoil hat brigade are already onto it claiming that it is manmade etc.

I would hope it will tend to "burn itself out" as people catch it and become immune. Obviously that doesn't sort out the problem of what to do about pregnant women, but in the long term it's not like Ebola (even if there are occasionally complications in adults) it's more like Rubella I think.

I suppose the risk is of it becoming a low-level but constant threat to pregnant women. That would indeed be frightening enough, mind you.

Look no further than on this very thread.

We already have two cases here. It's the height of irresponsibility to go ahead with the Brazil Olympics in this environmental. Clearly as in 1936 money is all that matters to these people.

Venezuela is wide open to this It's a total mess under the mismanagement of Maduro. Public services have broken down, garbage not collected, streets not cleaned, no food, no insecticides etc etc. And coastal Venezuela, where most of the population lives, is just right for busy mosquitos.
Venezueala's primary healthcare system is based on the highly sucessful Cuban model. It is likely to be the best prepared of the mainland South American countries, because it's government invested huge resources into primary preventitive healthcare and universal health education programmes.

A serious threat indeed. Shocking to hear it could be hear.
The Western Mainstream Media can now get into overdrive in fearmongering mode.

The latest in america is that it has been passed on by a STI. (HIV/ AIDS part 2)

SEXUALLY-TRANSMITTED ZIKA CASE CONFIRMED IN TEXAS

More than likely who ever was infected was some 33 year old.

In other news ZIKA virus virus(ATCC® VR-84™) was patented by the Rockefeller's, they probably have another patent on the vaccine and the chip implant signature that goes with it.

I was asked to repeat these two posts over here from the Planned Parenthood thread:

When faced with carrying a child with microcephaly, should a woman have the choice to terminate such a pregnancy? If you and your cohorts are against this, then are you prepared to cover the phenomenal cost of taking care of them throughout their lives.
PP, by the way, stands in an excellent place to take the necessary blood tests and scans that will be needed and at low cost, or do you wish to shift this too onto the already strapped hospital system?
Your god is calling your bluff.

Well, this is scary news. Faced with possibly hundreds of thousands of babies born with microcephaly, ....."Health officials say that a person in Texas has become infected with the Zika virus through sex, in the first case of the illness being transmitted within the US during the outbreak in Latin America.
The unidentified person had not travelled but had sex with a person who had returned from Venezuela and fallen ill with Zika, Dallas County health officials said yesterday."....More

Don't ignore.
Ireland's had it's first cases- two people returning from travel to Brazil [what adventurous places we get to].
Sexual transmission is possible [something else to work into those chat up lines]

In the UK the hard-pressed NHS has just announced it doesn't want blood donations from anyone who has been to affected countries in the previous month.
Zika virus sees blood ban on donors returning to UK from Latin America

The WHO believes Zika will spread across most of the Americas, and be 'bigger than Ebola', aided by mosquito bite transmission

The point is: Do the thinking now and get this one right.

Get it right how, exactly? Malaria and Dengue are still around, still no reliable vaccines apparently. Quite the contrary, there are in fact new mosquito-borne viruses like Chikungunya and now Zika. It looks like this might take decades or even be impossible, if malaria is anything to go by. All the more so as most people won't care about getting it, they'll just be ill for a few days at most. Unlike Chik.

So in the meantime what happens when the first infection of a pregnant woman resident in Ireland occurs? Unless she's suicidal over the diagnosis she gets told to get on with it?

We had posters here saying Ms Y should be tied down and force fed because she'd got to such a late stage in her pregnancy - well the same question is absolutely going to be an issue here because the diagnosis of microcephaly is clear well before term, but probably not much before the end of the second trimester.

" “In a few cases, men who contracted the virus infected their partners through intercourse,” the ministry’s statement said. It therefore advised people who visit a country suffering from Zika “to use a condom while having sexual relations during their stay there, and also for four weeks after leaving the danger zone.” People should refrain from donating blood for 28 days after leaving a country with Zika. But once that period is over, donating is fine, it said.

On Monday, the World Health Organization declared a global health emergency over Zika. It said there are weighty suspicions that Zika indeed causes microcephaly, noting that the virus was found in the brains of five of 49 babies who died of microcephaly recently. There is currently no treatment for Zika, and the WHO said it will take more than a year to develop a vaccine"

Here's something new and worrying:

How does Zika virus affect a pregnant woman and fetus?
Zika virus may be transmitted from a pregnant woman to a fetus during pregnancy or at the time of birth. Studies have found poor pregnancy outcomes in some babies whose mothers were infected with Zika virus while pregnant. This includes microcephaly, a birth defect where a baby’s head is much smaller than expected.

Remembering the initial spread of AIDS [yes, I am that old] and knowing that some men/ husbands/ wives/women will stray, I would seriously suggest that condoms should be used consistently until there is a vaccine. This has nothing to do with homosexuality, but only safe sex. From the information coming out I would doubt any form of sex is now "Safe" from ZIKA. Not missionary sex, not anal sex, not oral sex as all can probably carry this virus.
