It goes along, doesn't it?

The latest example came just last night. The government knew the latest 'Final - so far' Bank bailout cost. It refused to tell the Dáil. At the time the representatives of us the people were being asked to extend the guarantee. They voted Tá.

The figure is then given to the media this morning.

Two points:

This is patent contempt for parliamentary democracy. In a way, so what - but the second point may have more resonance.

That is this - when we see the well paid and resourced people in 'Opposition' in Leinster House taking this contempt lying down, giving the process a fake credibility by participating in the charade, and we compare their inaction with Mixer Truck Man we have really only one response. He is right and they are wrong. A response only heightened by the fools in FG who break the silence inside the railings (silence maintainted by a mortarfied FF) to give out about the driver and accuse him of doing things he did not even do. They should have been outside the gates yesterday showing up the guarantee vote for the sham it was.

When parliamentary democracy is subverted what does history suggest to us happens next?

Is there any way we as citizens can bring a case against Cowen for blatant lying to our elected parliament?

We pay the Opposition to deal with his lies.

Instead they just play the game.

They'll have fun when they cross the floor in the Spring with the coffers bare and the bailiffs at the door.

What more can they do? FF and the Cabbages have a majority.

The cynic in me believes this is Lenny's intention. He wants the next Govt to have to do the heavy lifting, then he'll raise his head over the parapet again, promising An Boom Nua.

The government has been showing contempt for both the Oireachtas AND the electorate for the best part of 20 years now. And you are right. The so-called opposition has just rolled over and accepted it. Is it any wonder that FG are polling so badly? I don't think so.

Equally, the fact that FF are maintaining a 24% showing is not surprising either. Again because the 'opposition' has been content to sit back, absorb the salaries and the perks and effectively do nothing to at least highlight the problems let alone challenge FF, the green quislings and the 'scabs' who cling to their coat-tails.

We have had Lenihan refusing to answer questions on MI this morning preferring to blame the electorate in their role in the collapse of the economy and the banks who were responsible for reckless lending (no mention at all of FF responsibility). Then the mantra started which is dutifully being spewed out by the rest of FF. It is terrible but at least we have reached 'closure'. And not a meaningful peep from anyone in FG.

In one 5 minutes (or less) of action, the Truck Man did more to highlight the governments contempt than the opposition achieved in 13 years.

Baaaaaaaaaaa!
It is as if they are all suffering from a political equivalent of Battered Spouse Syndrome.

They have been in a big airless building being abused by FF for most of their adult lives.

They have been rendered helpless.

And when Mixer Man arrives - they turn on him!!!

We've had 20 years of Partnership which subverted parliamentary democracy and not a peep out of the Dail so why would things change now?
What can the Opposition do? They can shout and scream as much as they want to but they know that when issues are put to the vote ,every sneaky, snivelling selfserving member of government and Independents will vote the same way .Opposition are powerless to stop it .

I said 'the Dail', not 'the opposition.'

Nope it wouldn't.

There is nothing the opposition can do. If they go on the attack like Fine Gael did this week, they get attacked. They are completely powerless, as are the people. The government just keeps on lieing and lieing and gets away with it. It really is a horrible feeling.

I heard something about Joan Burton demanding that Lenihan publish an AG(?) report in the Dail today. Is this true?

If she HAS demanded verification of information the government quotes then it is about time and is the type of thing the opposition should be doing all the time. Demanding proof in support of statements made by ministers.

When a government with the contempt for the opposition and the people of this country is allowed to get away with it without serious civil disturbance were f****d...the opposition should walk out of the Dail over the blatant lies they were told by FF over the bank guarentee and lead the people of this country onto the streets until the government collapses but they won't...

Why..? because as you pointed out the likes of O'Dowd & Co are not fit for purpose...they have no will or bottle to really take on the FF bootboys, instead thay would rather feather their own nests and slate anyone like cement truck man who shows any spark of protest...they think they will waltz in to power in the next election and are afraid that if people are allowed to show that sort of get up and go attitude it might come back on them if things get worse

FG are f****d..they have let the irish people down for the last time and they will pay the price at the ballot box...

O'Dowd is a disgrace for exaggerating the incident and should be taken to task..the laws of physics alone show he is full of sh1t..a 10 to 15 tonne truck hitting those gates at speed would of taken them off their hinges and possibly taken the truck over the ramp inside and into the main courtyard..

Politicial vacuum..? we saw the results in the north when there was an absence of responsible politics....

I heard something about Joan Burton demanding that Lenihan publish an AG(?) report in the Dail today.
The British LibDems demanded that in Westminster re. the decision to invade Iraq and it was refused on the grounds of cabinet confidentiality. I'm sure that would be FF's excuse too.

Btw, Ms.Burton wants an explanation as to why the €34bn figure was released to foreign media before the Irish people and the Dail. A pertinent point seeing as I was reading on Reuters and the Grauniad websites about it before midnight last night.

Can't quite agree with dictatorship so checked a load of '-ocracies' in wiki, found 'kratocracy':

government by those who are strong enough to seize power through force or cunning.
(My emphasis)

How else did Bertie get as far as he did, being the most cunning of them all? No surprise that the party which seems to lack cunning spends the majority of its life on the opposition benches.
